Chapter 5

The pain and spinning darkness was a terrible mixture, making me doubt my existence as my thoughts became quiet and almost nonexistent. It was like I was dying. For what felt like forever I suffered waiting for it to end but the sound of other panicked voices snapped me back to reality. My body shivered as I tried to find something to anchor on to so I wouldn't lose myself again.

"Don't fight it. Let it happen." Somebody whispered, slipping their hand into my shaky, balled up hand. I grabbed onto their voice hoping I could stay in reality a little longer. I cried out as another wave of pain struck me and the entire gym went black. I was relieved of my pain as everything went silent and I stood up. I no longer was holding someone's hand and the dark didn't scare me anymore. I walked forward towards the whispers in front of me. When I reached the whispers I felt a pull in my stomach and the dark whisked away as fast as it came. I turned around my back feeling heavier than normal and I saw my classmates all huddled together near the teacher. Some of them looked terrified and others looked surprised or had no expression.

"Congratulations Allyssia!" Arcane stepped out of the group and started clapping.

I frowned knowing what happened when I caught a glimpse of a black wingtip behind me. Of course I wasn't anything like my mother. I heard somebody hit the floor and cry out right before the gym went dark again and I felt things brush past me with incredible speed. A tiny flickering light lit up in front of me. I started walking towards it feeling its pain. Milo's silhouette appeared in front of me as I got close enough. He was curled on the ground in the position I was in not that long ago. I kneeled down knowing his pain. He looked up at me with pain in his eyes. I wrapped him in a hug. He sat shocked for a minute before hugging me back. The shadows slowly seeped away revealing black wings on Milo's back. Milo seemed much more relaxed as the shadows went away, taking their whispers with them.

"You ok?" I asked quietly, still hugging Milo.

"... I think so. Are you ok?" Milo asked, hugging me tight.

"Sorta....... You know, just being in pain... Growing wings kinda sucks." I said, hugging him a little as my back twinged with pain.

"Agreed. My back hurts so much right now......" Milo chuckled, letting me go and turning a bit red when he realized how close we were.

I scooted away from him, my cheeks gaining a pink tint of their own. We sit there in silence for a second before I stand up and help him up, glancing at the group of confused people. The Gym teacher approaches us and gives us slips and tells us and Arcane, Jack, and Adrien to walk with us to the nurse. We all walked out of the gym and down the hallway.

" Sooo........ I think Milo won the bet of him winging before the rest of us." Adrien said, breaking the silence and making all of us chuckle.

"Definitely...... Well I don't have the 10 dollars now but I can get them to you tomorrow Milo." Jack chuckled, walking beside Arcane, as Adrien passed Milo 10 dollars.

"I can't believe you guys bet on who would get their wings first."I rolled my eyes as I walked.

"Hey. Well it's a win-win scenario. I got the money and you're talking to us again." Milo pointed out.

"Well don't expect it to last too long."

"Eh.... I don't really expect anything.." Jack chuckled as we walked.

"Well I expect at least some sort of communication." Milo said faking being offended and he made us all laugh again. We all laughed and we had to

stop because we couldn't stop laughing, so we just stood there in the hallway laughing uncontrollably like we never had any problems.

"Omg... my sides hurt so much." Adrien gasped in between laughs, leaning on Jack who was also laughing pretty hard. Jack gasps a little and calms down, still giggling a bit. We eventually calmed down and were able to stand up again.

"I haven't laughed like that in so long....."Arcane chuckled, leaning on Milo so he could stand up. Milo helped him stand up with the little amount of balance he had himself.
"Wanna race to the oak tree? For old times sake?" Jack offered, grining.

"And deny the fact that we're supposed to be in the nurse's office? Excellent plan." Milo said grinning and made us chuckle again.
"Hey Ally, still think you can beat us?" Adrien said sarcastically

"Any day, any time Rien." I said sticking my tongue out at him and getting ready to run. I hadn't run in a while since I quit track but I was still sorta in practice.
"3, 2, 1... HEY!" Jack yelled as I took off.
"CATCH ME IF YOU CAN SLOWPOKES!"
They ran after me as Jack yelled "go" and chuckled as he ran. I was in tights and a skirt but I still sped ahead of them. The hallway flashed by me and I burst through the back door of the building outside and ran up to the oak tree before slapping my hand on the rough bark.
"I wi-" I was cut off as someone slammed into my back and twisted my wings a bit as I bumped into the tree. I glanced back and saw Milo rubbing his head and the others way way behind us at the door.
"How in the-" I muttered
"I don't know, I just wanted to get up here faster and suddenly I was right behind you and I tripped." Milo sighed
"YOU CAN TELEPORT!?" Arcane yelled at Milo as her ran over
"Wait what!?" Me and Milo exclaimed looking at each other as the others ran up. Milo looked at his hands and at me and then back again before pretending to shoot webs. I tried not to laugh as he looked disappointed.

"Huh, that's actually a rare ability for Dark Draconics. Wow." Arcane said, looking dazzled.

"Of course you would know that." Adrien said as he caught up with us as Jack strolled up behind him looking exhausted.
"You.....* gasps * run, way too fast." Jack leaned on Adrien and sighed as he caught his breath.
"Heh heh. I win." I grinned as Jack rolled his eyes.
Arcane just looked mesmerized by Milo, and was examining him like a specimen at a lab, completely ignoring Milo's overwhelmed look.
"save me" Milo mouthed at me and I just snickered.
"That's a you problem right now, Milo." I said snickering.

"Why meeeeeeee....." Milo groaned leaning against the tree.
We all burst into laughter and Arcane backed away to give Milo his space. I noticed something dark at the fence and looked over. For a second my entire vision turned into a dark tunnel, spinning and crackling as it focused on the dark figure.
"You ok?"
Milo's voice snapped me out of it and the dark figure disappeared. I stared at that spot for a second more before looking at the others worried and confused faces
"Yeah...I'm good... just.. Thought i saw something." I muttered glancing at the spot again
"Maybe we should get to the nurses office," Jack commented.
"Yeah...." I stared a second more before following behind Milo as we walked back inside and down the hall. I listened to the sounds of our feet against the concrete floor, Jacks still heavy breathing, the rattle of the chains on Adrien's pants, Arcanes muttering as he thinks out loud, and Milo's shuffling layers as i tried to center myself again and avoid thinking about that figure. They stopped snapping me out of the trance.
"We're here."
I looked up at the door marked Nurses Office. I nod, acknowledging Adriens words as they, worriedly and quietly, follow me into the Nurses office. I pushed the door open and stepped into the sterile smelling room with cots and shelves decorating it. Nurse Mari was attending to a student who looked like they took quite a spill.

"Sign in, and i'll be right there!" Nurse Mari called over to us.

Me and Milo walked over to the sign in sheet and put down our names and grade. I sat down on a cot and Milo stood next to me while the others stood on the other side of the room by the door. "And now we wait" Milo muttered.
