"I'll see you later sweetheart! Dinner's in the fridge. Just reheat it! And don't forget your sister!" Her yells got quieter as she closed the door and (I assumed) walked to her car. My mom was off to work, and my dad had left much earlier before I awoke. I'd be home alone all day after I dropped off my little sister at school. But that wasn't for about an hour from now.
To pass the time, I spent that hour watching a show downstairs. Then, a commercial break played, when I realized the time. "SHIT!" I yelped, running back up the stairs. "Hey you, we gotta go!" I gently shook my little sister. She was much younger than me, only in grade one.
"But I wanna sleep." She pouted at me, rubbing his little eyes.
"I know but you're going to be late. Here," I said as I handed her some clothes I picked out for her. "Put these on, okay? Let me pack your bag." My footsteps were heavy on the staircase as I rushed back down and put the lunch I made my sister in her small bag pack. She was downstairs soon enough, and we walked peacefully to the bus stop once the door was locked.
"Y/n?" She peeped with her pitchy, childlike tone.
"Yes?" I replied automatically as we stopped to wait for the bus to come pick her up and take her to school.
"Yesterday when I was playing pass with Daddy, the ball went over the fence. But he gets home late and I wanna play with it as soon as I get home," She complained as if her life was over. I didn't understand the fuss over a ball but kept listening. "Can you get it for me when you go home?"
"Sure, I'll do that," I chuckled and kissed her head as the vehicle stopped by us. She ran up the stairs and sat down, waving as she drove away and greeted her friends with excitement. But after all of that, I completely forgot to ask her which neighbours had her ball in their backyard.
To the right of my house was a welcoming old couple, who I prayed had the ball. To the left was H/n's family. His mom and mine became best friends from the instant they moved in, but he and I, on the other hand? Well, I find him annoying. He stops at nothing to tease people, and I can't tolerate it. I don't know him that well, but that doesn't make anything better.
I made my way home, but first went to ask the couple next door for permission into their backyard- if they had the ball, that is.
"Y/n dear! It's so nice to see you!" The elderly woman exclaimed as she hugged me after opening the door once I had knocked.
"It's nice to see you too, Ms. Peterson," I smiled brightly. "I'm sorry to bother you, I was just wondering if there was a pink and orange ball in your backyard. My sister tossed it over yesterday, but I don't know if it was over on this side," I explained.
"I'll check for you deary," She grinned warmly, leaving me waiting at the door for a few minutes before she returned. "No, I'm afraid the little one didn't toss it over on this side. 'Must be at the other side. Just ask H/n, he's probably home. That sweet boy will get it for you. He comes and cuts our grass occasionally for free! How sweet, right?" She babbled.
"Yeah, that's nice," I gave another smile, though I didn't exactly believe her. There's no way. No. He wouldn't go out of his day to do that. "Well thank you anyway, and have a good day!"
"You too, dear," She closed the door as I headed down the steps to walk to my place next door.
Great. Now, I have to get the ball from H/n's. But no, no I wouldn't ask. No. I mean, our moms were close. Sneaking in wouldn't mean a thing. I'd just say my sister threw her ball over the fence and wanted me to get it quickly, but I saw no cars and thought no one was home, which is why I snuck in.
