As they entered Dr. Kim's office, the secretary greeted them warmly and asked them to wait for a moment while she informed the doctor of their arrival. Yunjin and her family took a seat in the waiting area, exchanging small talk to pass the time. The anticipation of the appointment weighed heavily on Yunjin's mind, but she tried to stay positive, knowing that her family was there to support her every step of the way.
Dr. Kim emerged from his office, greeted Yunjin's family with a warm smile, and exchanged a brief hug with Sana. Yunjin and Dr. Kim performed their "original fist bump," a playful gesture they had developed over their many visits.
"Good to see you, Yunjin," Dr. Kim said kindly, before turning to the family.
"Please, come into my office," he invited, holding the door open for them.
With a sense of familiarity and trust, they followed him inside, ready to discuss Yunjin's health and potential other drug usages including chemotheraphy.
As Sana and Yunjin settled into their seats, Dr. Kim began the conversation with a friendly inquiry, "How's it going, Yunjin?" Yunjin smiled and replied, "It's going okay, Dr. Kim. I'm in Soumu High now." Dr. Kim nodded, listening attentively as Yunjin provided updates on her schooling.
Dr. Kim's surprise was evident as he learned that Yunjin was attending Soumu High. "Really? My daughter studies there too," he exclaimed, his eyes lighting up with recognition. Yunjin's eyes widened in surprise, realizing the connection. "Oh, I didn't know that," she replied, a smile tugging at her lips. The revelation added a new layer of familiarity to their conversation, bridging the gap between doctor and patient with a shared connection outside the clinic walls. They continued their discussion, now with an added sense of camaraderie.
Despite the clinical setting, there was a sense of warmth and familiarity in their interaction, a testament to the long-standing relationship they had built over the years.
He made notes in her file, his experienced eyes scanning for any signs of concern or changes in her health. Sana chimed in occasionally, adding details to the conversation.
Yunjin didn't press further about Dr. Kim's daughter, as her focus shifted to her excitement about having fun in high school with her friends, Zuha and Eunchae.
Dr. Kim's words pulled Yunjin back to the present as he discussed her new medication, Cytarabine. He explained that Cytarabine could be used alone or in combination with other chemotherapy drugs. He went on to describe how the medication worked by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in her body. Yunjin listened intently, absorbing the information, grateful for Dr. Kim's expertise and guidance in managing her condition. She nodded, acknowledging the importance of the treatment in her ongoing battle against cancer.
Dr. Kim turned to Sana, Yunjin's mom, seeking her agreement on the treatment option.
"I understand, Doctor. But let me and Jihyo talked about it first. I don't want to the only who has a say on this kind of discussion." Sana replied.
Dr. Kim nodded understandingly, acknowledging the importance of having a thorough discussion and considering all options before moving forward with treatment. He reassured them that he would be available to address any further questions or concerns they might have. Sana thanked him, feeling grateful for his support and understanding.
As they left Dr. Kim's office, Yunjin and Sana made their way to Jihyo's station. They spotted Eunchae, diligently writing in her notebook, likely working on her assignment. Jihyo noticed them approaching and greeted them with a warm smile. Sana briefed her on the option Dr. Kim had provided for Yunjin, mentioning that it seemed more convenient.
Jihyo, understanding the importance of making an informed decision, suggested, "Let's discuss it at home." They all agreed, knowing that such an important decision required careful consideration and a family discussion in a more private setting.
Sana nodded thoughtfully at Yunjin's response but gently reminded her, "Dr. Kim mentioned that if the new medicine doesn't work well, we might have to go back to chemotherapy."
Yunjin sighed, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I know, Mom," she replied, her voice steady despite the weight of the topic. "But I'm willing to try it if it means there's a chance for less pain."
Sana reached over and gave Yunjin's hand a comforting squeeze. "We'll figure it out together," she said reassuringly. "No matter what happens, we'll be here to support you."
Eunchae listened quietly to the conversation, taking in the seriousness of the situation. Wanting to lighten the mood and reassure her sister, she spoke up, "Everything will be okay, Yunjin unnie. We'll get through this together."
Then, with a mischievous grin, she couldn't resist teasing her sister again. "And speaking of getting through things," Eunchae added playfully, "how about I set up a 'study date' for you and that cheerleader, Chaewon unnie?"
Yunjin rolled her eyes but couldn't help but smile at her sister's attempt to lift her spirits. "Eunchae!" she protested, half-laughing. The car filled with a lighter, more hopeful atmosphere as they continued their drive home.
