As per usual, Cheryl's eyes could not be torn from the television; Night Owls' anniversary special was live. Despite her mundane days, she always waited up to watch her beloved talkshow host entertain a sleepless nation. Today was no different, Cheryl thought, until Jack Delroy announced "As a special thank you to you night owls, I would like to give one of you lucky viewers the opportunity to fly out and watch the show live! as well as meet me, of course,"
A pause. Jack clasped his hands together dramatically, grinning from ear to ear
"but you must write a letter to me, explaining why you think you deserve this chance. on the 15th of September, I will announce the winner. And now, a few messages." he breathed, smile softening as the show cut to a screen advertising the address for mail."Oh my God." Cheryl squeaked, balling her fists and bringing them to her chest excitedly. Without missing a beat, she sprang out of her armchair and rummaged around her chest of drawers to find some writing paper and a stamp. Seeing Jack Delroy on television was one thing, but to see him in real life? Cheryl was baffled at the mere thought. Once she had slumped back down, her mind raced like the wind - what could she write? what would get the attention of Jack-Fucking-Delroy? In an effort to not overthink, Cheryl let her pen lead the way - letting her hand guide her.
Dear Mr. Delroy,
My name is Cheryl Mac. There's a 99% chance you will not read this letter yourself, and if that is the case, at least I tried! Not to toot my own horn, but I have been watching Night Owls since its pilot, and I have not missed an episode. Every single night for that singular hour, you whisk away any worries or doubts I have. It is such a wonderful feeling - although I wonder if your jokes are scripted.
I'm not going to write myself to sleep here, but I believe you should pick me because I'm a loyal viewer, and I think you're very handsome.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Mac."Why the hell did I write that? Oh, whatever. He's not going to see it anyway." Sighed Cheryl, sliding the letter into an envelope.
