"I am in need of solitude, Coral," Lady Agatha Danbury confided to her most trusted maid.
"But, my lady," Coral replied, hurrying down the stairs of the estate, "it has been fifteen years since you last sought solitude."
Coral draped a coat around Lady Danbury's shoulders.
"And hopefully, it shall be just as I remember," Agatha replied, stepping out the door.
As she strolled through the grass, basking in the sunlight, she felt a sense of freedom and peace. Her children were no longer young; even little Violet now had two children, with a third on the way.
Oh, where has the time gone?
She saw the old shed and smiled wistfully, memories of her encounters with Lord Ledger bringing a tear to her eye. Though they no longer rambled together, their paths still crossed at balls and other events of the ton.
She missed the days of her youth, when she was in her prime and not seen as a spinster.
Entering the shed after so many years felt different. The interior had been transformed, now a calming and relaxing space with only a bed as its furniture.
She sat on the small bed and cried for the first time in years, mourning both what she had lost and what she had never had. Lord Danbury had been the man she was destined to marry, while Prince Adolphus had looked good only on paper. Lord Ledger had always been the one she could talk to, the one she had given everything to.
He was her first taste of freedom, and just as quickly as she had gained it, she had lost it. Now, years later, she grieved that loss anew.
"Agatha?" a voice called as it entered the shed.
"Lord Ledger!" She quickly stood and wiped her eyes. "I apologize, I shall be on my way."
As she tried to pass, he gently took her arm. "Agatha," he said softly, drawing her closer. "Are you well?"
"Of course, my lord," she replied, fanning her eyes. "It is merely the flowers affecting me."
"Let me see." He cupped her face, bringing her nearer. "No, those are tears."
They gazed into each other's eyes.
"I have missed you, Agatha."
"I have missed you too, Lord Ledger."
"Please, call me Edgar," he murmured as he drew even closer.
"I am sorry to hear about your wife, Edgar," she said.
"Tragic, indeed," he responded with a surprising smile. "It has left me lonely."
"I have been lonely myself, with only two children at home now. "
"Violet is also her own person..."
"We cannot" Agatha said
"We will not" He responded to her
They locked eyes, and then they were upon each other, their kisses fervent and passionate.
Their kisses were fervent, devouring each other in a manner that society would deem scandalous. Clothes were cast aside in wild abandon until nothing remained.
Agatha pushed Edgar onto the bed and climbed into his lap.
"You do not know," Edgar murmured between kisses, "I have been waiting for this moment, Agatha. I cannot live without you."
"I need you," Agatha responded, her voice laden with desire.
He slid his fingers into her, and she gasped.
"Please," she whispered.
"I do not believe I have ever heard you beg. I find I quite enjoy it," he said, moving his fingers slowly.
"PLEASE!" she cried out.
"Please what?"
She looked down at him, her voice trembling.
"Please make me yours."
That was all it took for him to surrender fully to her, mind, body, and soul.
They lay entwined, the scent of their passion still lingering in the air, their bodies glistening with sweat.
"I love you, Agatha," Lord Ledger whispered. "And I do not think I can let you go."
"Then do not stop," she replied with a smile. "Keep making me yours."
Nine months later
After a painful delivery, more arduous than most due to Agatha's advanced age, a new young heiress entered the world. This precious child, destined to remain in the shadows until the appointed time, would one day capture the attention of society.
"She's beautiful, my love," Edgar murmured, his smile encompassing both of his cherished secrets.
They had chosen to keep their relationship concealed from the prying eyes of the ton and their own families.
For the past six months, they had resided in the serene countryside of France, having fled there upon discovering Agatha's pregnancy.
"Indeed she is," Agatha whispered, gazing tenderly at their newborn. "I'm going to do better this time."
The infant cooed softly as Edgar lifted her gently into his arms. In that moment, he realized he was unwilling to miss a single milestone in their daughter's life.
"I shall remain here and care for our child," he declared, watching as the baby drifted into a peaceful slumber. "It will appear less socially suspicious if I linger in the countryside, considering the 'lonely year' I have endured."
Agatha chuckled softly and stroked the baby's fine hair. "I will return to England when she turns one, and visit every three weeks."
Though their plan seemed infallible, they both knew that one day their secret would need to be revealed to society. Fear for their daughter's future gnawed at them, yet they chose to savor the present joy of their newfound family.
"What is her name, my lady?" Coral inquired.
"Her name is..." Agatha began.
