You had been attending school for two years at this point. Meeting new faces was the distraction you needed from the whirlwind of a brain. If not for the energy expended trying to claw your way through thoughts, becoming outgoing and social would have come naturally. Alas, you can never have both, and such was in front of you in the form of school.
Stepping into the door, you were met with a quaint little classroom. The walls were decorated with colourful patterns, and each part of the room was sectioned off using the changing coloured patterns on the floor. It left you feeling nostalgic for coming back to such a place again.
"Okay, honey, we have to go now. Make sure you're nice to others, alright?" Your mother smiled, but the crease in her brow did not cover it. She gave you one last hug, clinging on as if it would be the last time she saw you. Your father, rubbing her back in comfort and reassuring her that you would be fine alone under the supervision of the teachers, guided her out.
Seeing your parents depart was a crushing experience. Although your mind was that of a young adult, your being was still a child.
You held back tears between small sniffles and gripped the hem of your shirt with a trembling fist within a sea of wailing children.
Now, you were alone to face people. You let out a nervous sigh as you walked around and explored the place. The new scenery and stimuli were getting you slightly interested in the change of pace.
"Hello! You must be (Y/N)?" A young girl ran up to you with an almost too-bright smile.
"Mhm..." You hummed.
Where did she get my name? A bit weirded out and taken aback by the sudden greeting; you hesitantly hummed in agreement.
"Great! I'm Sora! I heard you were great at games! Now come with me!" She abruptly pulled you along by the wrist without waiting for you to say anything.
What does this kid want?!
The sudden action surprised you. You should have expected this sooner because children are honest and unfiltered, but your existence made you forget that.
"We need one more person to play!" She was pulling you and running so fast that you almost tripped over a ledge and faceplanted into the ground when being dragged out the door towards the rooftop, practically flying across the stairs at the speeds you were being brought along at.
"Hey! Don't pull me too much!" You warned her. Today was not a good day for a broken nose, and you were annoyed at an unbridled child acting on her whims, completely disregarding yours.
"Oh! Sorry.." Sora gave a sorry smile in response. Her lighthearted nature left a significant impression on you. Children at this age didn't have to worry about anything. If they did, it was almost always beyond their influence.
It wasn't like they could do much.
That's right. Some children often wished for death as an escape from reality. It's not that they actually could bring it upon themselves, but rather a lack of control. They wish just to be chosen by fate to exit the world and never have to face its tribulations again, all for the small price of never being wiser to the fact that they had ever lived a life.
-- all to beg the question:
So why not enjoy it while you are still granted an opportune moment? If life is rigged to one outcome, would you not have chosen the same? To have cared -- and been cared for, marching towards the end having known exultation that followed desolation. And after, for the end to welcome your soul all the same, yet changed.
