Oliver blinked his eyes open, the familiar sounds of cheering and shouting filling his ears. He tried to shake off the grogginess, convinced he was still dreaming. The last thing he remembered was reading the Naruto manga in his room before drifting off.
He rubbed his eyes and looked around, expecting to see his bed and walls adorned with posters of his favorite characters. Instead, he found himself seated on a bench in a large, dimly lit room with stone walls and a high ceiling. The room was filled with shinobi from various villages, all observing the matches below. The sight sent a jolt through him – this was the preliminaries arena for the Chunin Exams from Naruto.
Down below, he could see Naruto Uzumaki and Kiba Inuzuka facing off, the crowd around them buzzing with anticipation. Oliver's heart pounded. *This can't be real,* he thought. *I must still be dreaming.*
As the fight began, he tried to pinch himself, but his body didn't respond the way it should. He glanced down at himself and saw that he was wearing traditional Hyuga attire: a cream-colored jacket with short sleeves and a high collar, and dark pants. Panic started to set in. *Why am I dressed like Neji?*
He hardly noticed Naruto's antics during the fight, the crowd's reactions barely registering in his mind. However, when Naruto released a loud, unexpected fart in the middle of the battle, causing Kiba to recoil in disgust, Oliver couldn't help but chuckle. It was a rare, spontaneous reaction – something Neji Hyuga would never do.
From the corner of his eye, he noticed a concerned look from Guy Sensei, who was seated nearby. Oliver's heart skipped a beat as he saw Lee's worried face turn towards him. "Neji, are you okay?" Lee asked.
Oliver's confusion deepened. *Neji?* He felt the headband on his forehead, noticing the distinct headband with the Hyuga clan symbol tied around his forehead, partially covering a familiar caged bird seal. His hands trembling, he removed the headband and stared at his reflection in the shiny metal surface. The realization hit him like a punch to the gut. *I'm Neji?*
He glanced around, hoping to see some sign that this was all a dream, but everything felt too vivid, too real.
Guy Sensei leaned in, his concern evident. "Neji, you seem... different. Is everything alright?"
Oliver swallowed hard, trying to collect his thoughts. "I... I'm fine," he managed to say, his voice coming out more composed than he felt. He needed to figure out what was happening, but first, he had to keep up appearances.
As Naruto and Kiba's fight ended, Oliver felt a strange thrill at having witnessed such a memorable fight in person. But then, a wave of dread washed over him as he remembered what was next – Neji's fight against Hinata. *If this isn't a dream,* he realized, *I have to fight. I have to somehow manage to fight.* Panic bubbled up inside him; he had no fighting experience.
Lost in his thoughts, he barely heard the proctor's voice announce, "Next match: Neji Hyuga versus Hinata Hyuga."
Oliver's heart sank. He had no idea how he was going to pull this off. The eyes of the entire room were now on him as he stood up, stepping forward into the reality of his new, bewildering life.
"Neji, are you sure you're alright?" Lee's voice was filled with concern.
Oliver forced a reassuring smile. "I'm fine, Lee. Just a little distracted, that's all." But inside, he was anything but fine. Lee gave him a scrutinizing look, as if he is concerned, before nodding slowly and turning his attention back to the fight.
Oliver descended into the arena, his steps echoing in the vast space. He felt a surge of adrenaline as he approached his opponent, Hinata Hyuga, standing calmly on the other side. The weight of the situation pressed down on him as he prepared for the fight.
Neji remained silent, his expression unreadable. He searched for the words he remembered Neji saying in the original storyline, but they eluded him. Instead, he focused on the task at hand, his mind racing with strategies and techniques.
Hinata approached with a respectful bow, her Byakugan activated, her gaze steady. Oliver mirrored her gesture, trying to emulate Neji's confidence and composure.
The fight began, and Hinata moved with a grace that mirrored Neji's own style. She launched into her Gentle Fist techniques, aiming for Oliver's chakra points with precision and skill. Oliver found himself instinctively blocking and dodging, his body moving as if guided by Neji's muscle memory.
Each blow exchanged between them echoed through the arena, the tension palpable in the air. Oliver marveled at the fluidity of Hinata's movements, her determination evident in every strike. Despite his efforts to fight back, he soon realized that he couldn't match her skill.
But as he fought, a realization dawned on him – he wasn't just Oliver anymore. He was inhabiting the body of Neji, with all the training and skill that came with it. He didn't need to overpower Hinata; he just needed to outmaneuver her.
With a series of swift movements, Oliver deflected Hinata's attacks and closed the distance between them. Instead of striking with lethal force, he aimed for precision, targeting Hinata's chakra points just enough to disable her temporarily.
As Hinata fell to her knees, defeated but not broken, Oliver's thoughts raced. He hesitated, torn between his own beliefs and the character he was embodying.
In the end, Oliver chose a different path. He offered Hinata a hand, helping her to her feet with a nod of respect. "You fought well, Hinata," he said, his voice softer than he had expected.
Hinata looked up at him, surprise and gratitude shining in her eyes. "Thank you, Neji," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
As they parted ways, Oliver couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered within him. He had won the fight, but at what cost?with the plot now change? And what would happen when he faced Naruto, can he even stand a chance against him?
His expression quickly shifts as the next match was announced, Oliver couldn't help but feel a surge of anticipation. "Oh yeah, next fight begins," he muttered to himself, his expression shifting as he remembered the impending showdown between Lee and Gaara. In the original Naruto series, the outcome of this match had been a pivotal moment.
As Lee stepped forward to face Gaara, Oliver couldn't shake the feeling of dread. He remembered what happened to Lee in the original storyline, how he pushed himself to the brink of exhaustion and still couldn't defeat Gaara's impenetrable defense.
Despite knowing the inevitable outcome, Oliver couldn't help but wish Lee luck silently. "Good luck, Lee," he whispered under his breath, a flicker of hope igniting within him. Maybe, just maybe, Lee would find a way to overcome the odds stacked against him, even though he knew it was unlikely.
