River was excited. All day he'd been waiting for Charlie's labor to start, and when she'd confirmed it at lunch, it'd been hard enough to sit through the rest of the school day. His V.C. class was impossible for him to pay attention to, but all he'd received were smiles, and a brief statement of encouragement from Ace when the class had let out.

Now they were home, and it was only a matter of time for the babies to come. They found his dads in the living room for once, both on the couch, with Varian leaning against Nathan and resting his cheek on his shoulder. It was nice to see them relaxing for once, and not so absorbed in their jobs and his siblings. Seeing his dad out of the kitchen was even nicer.

He knew they'd had more time for relaxing together in the past, but with everything that'd been going on lately, it was hard for them. Now they seemed to be taking the moment, and he smiled at his dads when his other one looked up from resting his hand on his dad's leg.

"How'd school go?"

"Uncomfortable. And painful." Charlie answered.

"I don't really remember much after lunch." River admitted. "It was hard to concentrate."

"I can imagine," his other dad said with a small nod, glancing over to Charlie again. "'Drea will be here in a couple minutes, and then she'll help you get set up, since she knows what she's doing."

"Which means the other children should be retrieved," his dad spoke up, pulling away from his mate reluctantly. "I'll tell them to get ready."

"Yeah, alright," his other dad agreed, lightly squeezing Varian's leg before he retracted his hand.

River watched his dad get up and head for the stairs, then he looked back to his other one once he was gone. "Where are you guys going?"

"Probably wherever the other kids want to go. We're gonna have to keep them out of the house for a while, and that'll be easier to do at places they actually want to go," he answered, getting up from the couch too and sighing a little. "Of course I'm gonna have Andrea keep us as updated as she can, on what's going on, so if things go...not according to what we expect, then we'll know."

"She'll be okay Dad, but we'll let you know either way." River said, turning to look at Charlie. "Nervous yet?"

"Better to be over-prepared than under," his other dad shrugged, and Charlie sighed a little, shaking her head.

"A little. Not a lot. More than anything I just want to get this done and over with, you know? I want to see them."

"Yeah." River agreed, feeling another smile stretch across his face.

He was still really excited about this, but some part of him worried for Charlie and the babies still. His aunt would do her best, so he knew Charlie was in good hands. Then his mother had also said it would go smoothly, so that was another perk. He didn't really have any reason to worry, but maybe it just went along with the father thing.

It was quiet, for a few minutes. Until his aunt walked into the house and smiled when she saw everyone.

"Are we ready to have babies?" she asked loudly, her voice coming across the same excited range River felt, making Charlie smile slightly.

"Yes, we really are," she replied.

"Does it normally take this long?" River asked. "It's been happening all day."

"Yes it does, sometimes it takes a long time. Unfortunate fact of life. Which is why someone invented drugs. Praise whoever that was," his aunt said, walking further into the living room and moving to stand beside his other dad, bumping her hip into his. "You guys heading out soon, Dr. Vogel?"
