Red. Bright, dizzying red. Red like the sky when the sun is sitting on the horizon. Splashes of a darker hue here and there. White, fluffy clouds like the highlights of this horrible red liquid on my hands. My shirt. Staining them. Spilled in pools and drops on the rough, concrete floor next to an ID card that I was still too dizzy to read. Still flowing steadily out of that horrible hole in her side. And out of the big, red smile on her neck.
I couldn't think. I couldn't stand. I couldn't move a single muscle in my body. My hands stiffen around the strip of leather that is the handle of a blade. Was it me? Did I do that? I didn't know anything anymore. The red on my hands, on the blade, on the floor, and blossoming on her shirt; it was messing with my mind. I just stared at her. I didn't try to help. I don't know why. Maybe, because I knew she was beyond repair.
I didn't even know her name. She looks so pretty though. Her straight, chestnut brown hair which must have once fallen to her waist, was vigorously cut at random lengths. Long, blood-stained strands of it were soaked in the pools of red on the floor, stuck to our shirts. A singular hair on the knife blade. A wad of it in her mouth. To gag her – but I didn't know how I knew.
Her face must have once been beautiful too. A distant memory was fighting for my attention – one of long eyelashes that sparkled and showed off her warm, brown eyes and were impossible to ignore when she laughed, full, red lips that compelled you to look at her when she spoke. The way she tossed her hair and winked as she turned around. All her once-beautiful features had been savaged, cuts made to her lips and cheeks, a long gash on her forehead. Her hair matted with blood that came from an injury at the back of her head. Hit with a brick.
I don't know how I knew this. Don't ask me how I knew this. I dont know, I just don't. An ear-piercing shriek rang and echoed through my ears. The pain in my head flared and the tension in my body disappeared.
And I ran.
