"The boy was running across the bridge. If he stopped, this would be his last day. He was running almost for half an hour and his body was bursting with pain. Eventually, he gave up. He couldn't run anymore. Before he could look behind, a bullet shot through his head. Blood spread everywhere..."
"How much will you read, young mistress? It is about time for lunch." A maid said to a little girl named Harper.
"Okay I am coming Evelyn." Harper said.
Harper Kil was unlike any other 5-year-old. Born into the wealthiest family in the country, she lived a life similar to that of a princess. With no siblings to share her world, she grew up as a set aside child, adapted to the luxuries that surrounded her. However, her life took an unexpected turn when her parents told her during lunch that the Peks family, their long-standing business rivals, were going to pay a visit. The news of the approaching visit sent ripples through the Kil household. Harper was instructed by her parents to outshine Nova Peks, the son of the rival family, in every aspect.
As the guests arrived, Harper laid eyes on Nova, a boy who mirrored her age and shared her burden of family expectations. Despite his wealthy background, Nova appeared sad. Later, a chess match was offered by the Peks, an elusive threat of war for the young heirs to display their power. Firstly, Harper and Nova seemed evenly matched, but the weight of familial rivalry bore down heavily on Harper. In a dangerous moment, she noticed the deep stare of the Peks upon her, shattering her focus and leading to her defeat.
As she was alone in her room, tears streamed down Harper's face as she struggled with her first taste of failure. She heard the whispers of the maids about how pathetic she was. With no comfort from her family, she sweared to banish all unnecessary emotions from her life. From that day forward, Harper became an example of stoicism, refusing to display any impression of weakness, even in the face of tragedy. As the years passed, Harper's resolve only strengthened. When her mother tragically passed in an accident, she remained persistent, unyielding to grief. And when her father heartlessly abandoned her, casting her aside to an orphanage, she bore the betrayal with silent acceptance. With each passing suffering, Harper shed the Kil name, forging her own path lacking of sentimentality.
Harper was now 16 years old. She found herself in a new environment, attending a prestigious school in the neighbouring country on a scholarship. With the money she got from her part time job, she bought a small apartment. It was her first day of High school. But the first person she saw on the school gate was the last person she wanted to meet. Despite her efforts to escape her past, fate intervened cruelly as she crossed paths with Nova Peks once more. She hid her face with her blunt cut black hair, even if it meant avoiding the one person who had once shared her struggle.
The grand mahogany doors of the Elmwood Academy creaked open, revealing a whirlwind of excited chatter and bustling activity. Sixteen-year-old Harper Kil, a lonely figure covered in the school uniform, stepped into the chaos.
Her heart hammered a steady rhythm against her ribs, a stark counterpoint to the symphony of new faces and voices. Harper, christened with a silver spoon in her mouth, had never known the meaning of hardship. Until she did. Orphaned and abandoned, she had clawed her way out of the wreckage of her past, earning a scholarship to escape the gilded cage that had imprisoned her. Here, in a foreign land, she was Harper Smith, a girl with a past veiled in shadows and a future she intended to carve with her own unwavering hands.
As she navigated the labyrinthine corridors, searching for her classroom, she saw the students in groups talking with their friends. At last, she found her class. As she opened the large door, she gasped.
(It was something like this.)Even though she was shocked, she didn't show any expression. The class was good for Harper, who kept making notes. After all, she had to be the top student. After an hour, the bell rang. All the students were moving out when a flicker of movement caught her eye. A flash of brown hair, a lanky frame approached her – a ghost from a life she'd desperately tried to bury. Nova Peks. The weight of their shared childhood, a suffocating tapestry woven with unspoken burdens and a single, humiliating defeat, threatened to engulf her. Harper's grip tightened on the worn leather of her bag as he said
"Are you Harper Kil?"
