Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place. As far as Averin's orders were concerned I was going to die, as far as I was concerned Vixen was not someone I wanted to upset. Kidnap... It should be fine right?
"Peccatrix," The raspy and harsh voice did not change the outcome. Vitreus disappeared with a sharp flash of mana, a circle glowing behind us with a crack of lightning. I really just had the most rotten luck. Pulling at the vibrating blue bow sting as Vitreus shook the very ground we stood on with a roar. A latro core finding our fingers and rapidly grows into a boorish arrow just before we let go.
The latro flew towards one of the dragons as we had very quickly been swallowed in flames. The heat alone was enough to boil the Latro around me, as if trying to melt us into one. The flames hadn't touched us for more than a second before obsidian was melting together before us. I really had no shot here.
Grunting and grumbling as I crawled away from the latro melting off of me I hissed as I shook the remaining mana from my hand. "Vitreus, evacuate the remaining soldiers," I let out with a huff, pulling myself to my feet and wiping my cheek of my own mana. He paused his growling to whip his head towards me at the order.
"It's fine, I won't die," I glared pushing at the large set of jaws that pushed into me with numerous complaints. "Shut up! I get it!" I growled swatting at him, "Just do it," I shoved him in the direction of those trying to retreat with no success. A struggling Averin doing his very best to fend off flames I'm sure were burning him. "Gods, can't things be easy?! Huh?! Just for one fucking minute?!"
Stomping like a child I looked at my wall of Latros, who had abandoned their post of guarding the soldiers to block what would have surely killed me. Their cores desperately pulled back to keep them from the heat. We had at least learned that one after the last dragon attack. The blazen was I supposed to do? Wait it out? Like, come on.
Grumbling as they separated, one happy to swallow me. I'll just have to help them retreat then. My Latros spread like rats as the thought crossed my mind. Distraction it is. Opening our sharp claw, Custos grew from the ground, handing over a potion. Latro opened its jaws to let me drink. Tossing aside the vial, my stomach churned as the sky was soon raining arrows.
I guess I'll at least make it look like I tried. Pulling on the bow that was quick to come to my call again, Custos obediently stretched a potion into an arrow while we took aim. Aiming at the glowing dragon, who aiming for the retreating, we released just as its mouth opened.
The swirling mana halted at the large and sudden explosion that slammed into it. I missed. Latro's jaws opened with a screech at my own frustration. With attention successfully on us, we notched another arrow aiming for that very same green glow. A tail slammed into us just as we let it loose. Why couldn't she just bring one?
Sliding across the rough and rocky terrain, Latro cracked as we slammed into a boulder. The mana around me stitched back together as we lay still for a long second my body aching even with the layers around me. What if I just lay here? Let the Latros return? Play dead?
Unfortunately, I was not able to do so, a large and red glow coming right for me. Claws wrapped around us a second later. Oh? Can I just give up? Happily laying limp I let my Latro melt off, the claws rough and tight but not so painful I couldn't stand it. I could hear Vitreus's distress but it was moving farther. Oh, what a good boy, he must be doing as told.
Opening my eyes as I stayed limp I watched as the sky came in and out of view; the large wing of a dragon I most certainly would have died to hiding me gently from the sun as we climbed higher and higher in the sky. Why are we still going higher?
Humming as my face grew warming, I limited my mana to cover just that of my mouth and nose, not needing those below to see. My gaze dropped to the camp we were quickly clearing. Chaos below as no one tried to intercept the fleeing dragons. Chuckling as a black dragon was quick to change that, rushing right for us as I closed my eyes again.
Seeking out the clear vibrate mana line I pressed my relief as hard into it as I could, his wings faltering for a second at. A second that had another set of claws snatching him. A shriek of distaste split through the wind as my hair whipped around. A sigh leaving my covered mouth in relief.
Not freedom, but a step closer.
