You leaned against Shane's car, surveying the people surrounding you. The highway heading into Atlanta was at a dead stop, everyone rushing around and trying to figure out what was going on.
Shane was flipping through radio stations, all of them only emitting static. Beside you parked Carol, Ed and Sophia. Sophia was playing checkers with Carl in the back of the Cherokee with Carol watching over them as Ed smoked a cigarette.
Helicopters flew overhead, catching your attention; they were headed towards the city.
"Are we gonna go soon?" Sophia asked quietly.
"I don't know, baby." Carol responded. "I sure hope so."
Carol looked to his mother. "I'm hungry."
"I know, Carl. We all are."
Carol looked between Carl and Lori. "Why don't I get him something to eat? Ed's into all this survival stuff. We've got enough MREs to feed a small army."
"I'd sure appreciate it." Lori smiled.
"It's no trouble."
You watched as Carol disappeared to the other side of her car, the click of the door opening soon after. Then, the door slammed shut. You and Lori watched quietly as Ed scolded Carol for her offer.
Lori shook her head, turning to Shane who still sat in the driver's seat. "Still not getting anything?"
"There's nothing." He sighed.
"Big shocker." You responded.
"No, I mean there's nothing. The emergency broadcast stopped and that recording about the refugee center." Shane collected his keys and got out of the car. "It's all gone."
"How is that possible?" You asked.
"I don't know." Shane responded. "I'm gonna go up the road, see what I can see."
"I'll come with you." Lori responded.
Carol approached you, holding a few granola bars in her hands. "Ed must've forgot to pack those MREs. I found these in my purse."
"Thank you." Lori responded, taking one and handing it to Carl. She then turned to you. "Listen, do you mind keeping an eye on Carl for a minute?"
"Of course not."
Lori turned back to Carl. "Shane and I are gonna go scout up ahead a little bit and see if we can find someone that knows what's going on."
"I want to go with you." Carl spoke.
Lori shook her head, kissing him on the forehead. "You'll be safe here."
Shane nodded, placing a gentle hand on Carl's head. "Hey, we'll be back before you know it. Okay, little man?"
You watched as Shane and Lori disappeared into the crowd of cars. Carl went back to playing with Sophia, worries flooding your mind. What if they were turning people away now and that's why the recording stopped? How could you possibly be safe here?
As every question raced through your mind, you couldn't help but think about your brother. You missed him so much. It hadn't even been twelve hours since Shane had told you he'd died. Everything was moving so quickly that you'd not had a moment to truly mourn him.
The sound of an explosion in the distance caught your attention as you rushed to pull Carl close to you.
"Did that come from the city?" You asked quietly.
