Chapter Three:

55 8 5

1st month.

The first month with my official title was a giant mess. I couldn't go anywhere without my family or myself being crowded by friends or paparazzi. I was put on house arrest in a fancy rented house along with my family to lay low for the time being. During my unwanted lock down, parliament instructors were called to begin my studies on all things about my royal family line as well as to keep up with my language studies. Though I spoke fluent French it was still not up to par in their standards. Shocker. Along with taking more French classes I had to take Latin, Italian and I was given 2 free choices. Lucky me. As I didn't already feel like I was back in high school enough. Being the nerd that I was, my choices weren't hard really. I went with Japanese for all my anime and Korean for all my K-dramas. Though Jess laughed at me, I felt for one second myself again. Subtitles were going to be a thing of the past!

2nd month.

We couldn't hide inside this home forever and I was restless all the time. Stressed beyond belief. Anxiety and insomnia kept me up late at night with nothing to do besides pace across my jail cell AKA my room. Every morning when early sunlight shone through the blinds, I wished it was all a dream. Today was important though, I would be getting to pick my personale that would be with me my whole life basically. So in short I better know how to pick them or I was fucked. And I had 3 mountains of files on people to interview for the various positions that needed filling. I was talking to my temporary Royal Secretary about self defense classes to help me get rid of all this restless energy, when one of the palace guards who I had overheard on several occasions say he wasn't paid to babysit, snickered and whispered something about doing Yoga or Pilates. Good thing I lived to be petty and now I had a goal. I was going to learn to kick his ass on the mat one day. The Royal Secretary named Daphne having overheard him and his pals snicker, nodded and whispered to kick all their asses. I looked at four of them and took in their names and faces for a later visit. Payback is a bitch and so was I.

3rd month.

I went with my security; my bodyguards first. I stayed up all night looking at files and resumes, I needed to select a total of 12 bodyguards and 1 head of security. One thing I noticed early on was the palace really didn't like minorities and I was really petty. I chose 4, the best of the best special ops ladies, top of their classes and hot as hell and 4 medaled gentlemen from special forces, to interview. As for their leader I had my eye on a mountain of a man, a handsome man. Handsome man went by the name Gabriel, although he had a really gorgeous smile, it was his eyes that gave me a chill. I had never seen such an intense mixture of greens, it almost reminded me of a forest. Not a single one was French and I couldn't help but grin as I laid down for a quick nap.

"Avengers assemble." I whispered half yawning, thinking about my brother and his love for Marvel.

As much as the Head Royal Secretary twisted his mouth as if he had sucked on lemon, I went with my gut and did in fact choose the ones I had selected from the files. I loved the energy with my chosen security detail, but most of all I felt safe. Picking Gabriel as the Lead was the best choice, because as soon as I gave him the title he started barking orders. It helped that all of the others had worked with him at some point and in turn knew each other in passing.

4th month.

I had gone through two interviews with 10 people in each group trying to find my Royal Secretary, unfortunately all of them were men. I needed a woman's connection, for the things a man just simply wouldn't be able to understand. As I waited for the next group to arrive, I stretched my sore body and rubbed a bruise or two. I had been taking multiple self defense classes and as Gabriel had said the more I knew the better. Within those classes I was taking taekwondo, kickboxing and my two personal favorites, MMA and Krav Maga, which were the more intense ones. Though I was someone that never fit in with the big girl "label", I definitely did not have a model like body. It had taken me a good while to be confident in my midsize body and truly rock it but for the purpose of learning self defense my body needed to change with me as much as my intellect did. I rolled my shoulders and neck making them pop, when Daphne knocked on the door before opening and letting me know the next group was here. Being the last group to be interviewed, I decided to skip lunch and just get it over with. I glanced at my right hand and noticed the light tremors starting, I needed to finish this fast. This group finally had five ladies, dismissing the gentlemen with a shake of the hand and a sincere thank you, I turned to the ladies. As I read over their files quickly, I noticed one of the two younger ones near my age, silently looking around, taking it all in. Her eyes went from the number of exits, how many of the security detail was in the room and then to me. I let her take me in until our eyes clashed, she had been caught, but while others would have looked away she continued to hold my gaze. The only indication she felt anything but calm, was the way her ears were flaming red. Smiling, I looked through the files in search of hers. Ms. Luna had been Valedictorian throughout her school career, wanted to be an artist, but was currently the breadwinner for her family. She had drive and dedication which I respected wholeheartedly. I had made my choice, I wanted her to be part of my team. I glanced over to Gabriel and he gave me a discreet nod. I thanked the rest for coming and saw Gabriel walking them out. I stood and extended my hand to my new Royal Secretary. Only her gaze on my full blown trembling hand.

"Shit." I cursed, scrambling into my small backpack and pulling out my supplies.

With how bad my hand was shaking I couldn't get a steady grip on my lacing stick in order to open it to insert a new lancet needle. A calm and gentle hand took it from me, added a new lancet, and triggered the lancing stick.

"Which finger?" asked Luna.

Raising my left hand I held out my middle finger, right side up. She grabbed an alcohol swipe and disinfected my finger. As she waited for the alcohol to dry she added a new strip to my glucose machine before pricking my finger.

"69 you're low. Did you have anything to eat?" asked Luna as she put a band-aid on my finger.

"No, I skipped lunch."

"Can you show me how to do that please?" asked Gabriel from beside me, making me jump.

"You knew?" I asked him.

"I had an idea, it's kind of hard to miss that your fingers always had band-aids on them. I was waiting for you to feel comfortable enough to bring it up to me."

"Here." said Luna, handing me a glucose tablet since I was out of mine. "It'll help until we get you some food."

I put the tablet in my mouth and let it start to dissolve. I watched as Gabriel called the rest of the team in and had Luna teach them all how to handle and use my glucose monitor. As well as where to prick and how, which led to her pricking everyone so they knew how it felt.

"How do you know this so well?" asked Gabriel as he wrapped his band-aid closed.

"I'm diabetic as well." she called over her shoulder as she put away all my stuff back into my med kit. "What type are you, Princess?" she said looking my way.

"Type 2. And you can call me Elara, Princess when the others are around." I ended with an eye roll, which made everyone laugh.

"I have a feeling I'll love this job."

"Everyone this is Luna, newest to the team. Now let's go celebrate with some food."

Everyone cheered as Gabriel called it in to have a car brought to the front. As we walked to the entrance I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket, it was Jess.

Please tell me I can quit my job now.

No 😈

Bitch 😑

I love you too 😘

The rest of the night was filled with laughter and getting to know each other better. Maybe I could do this after all.
