"Alright everyone, settle down, settle down."
The banquet hall went quiet as the queen tapped her fork against her goblet. "As you all know, the Aerilion Empire has taken over The Nightwood. But this is no time to celebrate," the queen continued. "For it is in times of conquest that we must remain vigilant. We must not let down our guard, for the enemy is still out there."
"That is why I have called this banquet, to honor the brave men and women who fought in the battles against the creatures of The Nightwood. They have put their lives on the line to protect our kingdom, and it is only fitting that we show our gratitude."
The queen smiled at the assembled guests. "And now, I would like to call upon the head of the captain of the Aerilion Army to give a speech."
The captain stood up, his armor glinting in the candlelight. "Your Majesty, it is an honor to be called upon to give this speech. On behalf of the Aerilion Army, I would like to express our gratitude to the queen for her leadership and her vision. And we offer our undying loyalty to the Empire, and to the queen herself."
"Now, let us drink a toast to our victory over the Nightwood, and to the prosperous future of the empire." As the Queen raised her goblet, the hall erupted in cheers and applause.
Daisyette sat in their throne, observing the people's cheers and roars. They watched as the queen was escorted to her chambers. The young adult sipped their drink as they continued to listen to the joyful colonists celebrating a victory that was to go down in history.
After a while, the cheers died down as people left for home to sleep after such a tiring night. Since everyone was going home, Daisyette thought they should too. They walked down the seemingly long, twisted hallways to their chambers when they smelled a faint iron-like smell in the air as they passed their mother's chambers. Whatever, it was probably the smell of her makeup or something. When they arrived, the hand maidens were already there folding sheets and hanging up different colored dresses. They helped Daisyette out of the stiff blue dress and into a more comfortable cotton nightgown.
As the hours ticked by, Daisyette couldn't help but feel a bit creeped out at the iron-like scent they smelled earlier. Then they heard a high pitched scream coming from their mother's chamber. A guard then burst into Daisyette's room and led them down the twisted hallways. They tried to get a glimpse inside her mother's chamber, but was hustled along.
As the two continued down the hallway, Daisyette smelled what seemed to be smoke. "Why does it smell like smoke?" Daisyette asked. The guard immediately became aware of the smoke smell and hurried Daisyette out of the castle quicker. When the two were outside, Daisyette turned to look at the castle. Red hot flames licked the sides of the castle and rose higher and higher with each passing second. The place were they once grew up was now in flames.
A handmaiden whose cotton dress was stained with blood, soot, and dirt approached them, her face frozen in a shocked yet sad expression. "H-how do I put this," the handmaiden stumbled, tears welling up in her eyes."Your Majesty, your mother was found dead in her chamber with multiple deep wounds..w-we got there too late and she passed..I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you." "N-no! You must be lying!"
The handmaiden shook her head. "I'm not lying..." "W-wait, what's that?" Daisyette said as they shakily pointed to a shadowy figure standing in front of the now blackened castle gates. It had the wings of a fairy and the build of a slim human. "Fuck...Get the Empress to safely!" The head of the captain of the Aerilion Army shouted. Daisyette looked at the burning castle. That creature they saw before was now gone. They were hurried into a carriage that would take them to wherever the captain told the coachman to take them.
After a while, Daisyette had fallen asleep despite the occasional jolt or jab from the unpaved road which was supposed to be paved many years ago. Someone nudged her awake. "My Lady, we're here." Lily, Daisyette's Lady-in-waiting said.
Daisyette sat up and looked out the window.  The sky was pitch black was the occasional sprinkle of stars.
