ㅤㅤㅤAUBURN, ALABAMA, WAS usually a quiet city, families keeping to themselves and children staying indoors - something that was foreign for neighbouring towns. Perhaps it was the weather, the stuck-up parents, or, perhaps, it was the orphanage that shadowed the east end. Sunnycreek Home was an eerie sight, rusted metal fences and overgrown hedges boarding off the children inside.

On open days the orphanage seemed pristine and well-kempt, on the inside that is, but Roxanne Callisto only had one word to describe it: fake.

Now, she had never stepped foot on the cracked pavement surrounding the Home, but even at only six years of age she could tell that something was wrong. Classmates that were hostages of Sunncreek were, as she described, grey and brittle; their eyes darkened and shallow, something she didn't see in her warm reflection each morning she brushed her teeth. No, something was wrong with Sunnycreek Home, and Roxanne knew it.

So, as she prepared her school bag for the new school year, she made her mind up on figuring it out. Something that was easier said than done.

The girl considered herself a chatty person - her name was usually called out by her teachers to shut up - however she hadn't dared speak to any of the Sunnycreek children, their phantom presence making her shudder. Still, her goal was to figure this out. She would have to grit her teeth and bear the chill.

Her clammy hands circled the straps of her backpack as she and her elder sister made their way to school. She glanced at the girl beside her, the thick blonde fringe that dusted her forehead cutting off half of her view. Primrose Callisto had her shoulders rolled back and a scowl on her lips, and Roxanne couldn't help but frown too.

"Primrose, wha–"

Roxanne was cut off before she had the chance to ask her question. The elder girl's voice sounded over Roxanne's, "Just Prim, I've already said that. It's nicer," she corrected.
