"Honey, I have to go back to work." My mom came jogging through the open maple living room doors wearing a blue shirt under a black vest, a matching black skirt and her black heels in hand. I also noticed her pink and blue hands. She had been painting late last night.
"I'm running late hoonneeyyy. Ugh. Can you help me find my shoes... Oh hell, I forgot my purse upstairs!" She paused from rummaging through the kitchen drowers for who knows what and face palmed herself.
I smirked at her. "Mom.... Your shoes are in your hands and your hands are pink and blue... Your purse is right on the livingroom couch." I pointed through the livingroom doors she paced through this morning to the dark brown couch with white pillows that sat right in front of our huge flat screen TV that was indeed holding her Gucci purse and keys to one of our many cars.
I continued. "You came in last night and threw your purse and keys on the couc-"
"Oh right! I almost forgot my keys. Awww honey, what would I do without you?" She walked over to the kitchen table I was sitting at and cupped my cheeks then kissed my forehead. "Honey I am so sorry to put you through this, I gave Maxwell the paid day off to see his family and go to that funeral thing. I think it was one of his sisters or mom or someone that died." She said after releasing my cheeks from her hold.
"Maybe you should call and check up on him."
"Oh, honey, I'm betting I'm the last person he wants to hear. I'm just hoping this day would be enough space he needs from me." I winked at her while still holding my smirk in its usual place.
"Uch. Honey!" She laughed, "I'm talking about how much I need him here obviously! Have you seen me this morning?" She laughed and slapped my arm.
"I have seen some of you this morning that I've never seen in years. Mom, you have never pretended to be working today just so you can go on a date." I laughed as her cheeks turned tomato red.
"How did you know?" She raised her eyebrows.
"I'm fifteen mom. It's a sixth sense I have."
"Rose......" She said in a tone that told me I was testinhg high waters and knowing my mom, she's just about the friendliest thing on Earth unless you push her buttons.
"I heard you through the intercom last night."
"Is that why it took me so long to get in?!" I could feel her anger as she walked through the livingroom doors.
"Mom where are you going? Aren't you still going on that date?" I calmed as I realized she was retrieving her keys and purse from the couch. I watched as she put on her less expensive trenchcoat, her black heals and walked to the front door of the mansion. I followed her and locked the door behind her as she left.
"Rose!!!!!!!!!!" My little sister yelled. I thought about taking the stairs because they were much closer but took the elevator to the second floor and then headed to her room. When I got there, she was holding her eyes tightly in the middle of her bedroom. I race to her side.
"Oh my god Shelby are you alright?"
"Yeah I think so-"
"Did you spray yourself with perfume in the eyes or something?"
"No. I just- It's fine Rose. I can see now." My heart rate went to normal and I plastered a smile in my face but on the inside, worry began gnawing on my insides.
What if she actually goes blind? What if she catches something? What if, if we don't take her to the hospital she dies? She needs to go to the hospital. I need to call mom.
"Rose, why are you starring at me like that?"
"Uh, you're just growing up so fast and you're so smart..... I'm glad you called me Shelby."
"Yeah, me too. I felt a lot better knowing I had someone there, plus, you're the only one in the house."
".... I think we need to put mom in this. There could be something wrong..."
"No!," she yelled, "Rose!" She whined.
"I think we do. I couldn't live with myself if you actually went blind and we couldn't help you because we didn't get you to the hospital in time."
"There's nothing wrong with my eyes. Mom says it's fine! My eyes just had to adjust."
"Mom knows about this?!"
"Uhh, yeah." I frowned.
"Since when?"
"It happened two days ago-" I clenched my fists as I tried to withhold my anger. In my mind, it would be simple enough to just make an excuse saying I was going blind instead of my sister but I would end up taking all of her tests and possibly receiving the treatment she needs.
"Breathe Rose. You look like a tomato. You're always overreacting."
"Well, the same thing happened to grandma-"
"Grandma just likes attention."
"I'm calling mom."
"Go ahead, you're not going to get anywhere. She won't believe you." I turned towards the door in determination.
I'll call mom and make her believe me, she doesn't have a choice.
"I'll make her believe me."
