Lexie sat beside Mark, gripping hishand and listening to the sound of his shallow breaths. Her headrested on his arm, her eyes fighting to stay open. She'd barely sleptsince they'd gotten back from the crash. She had attended Arizona'sfuneral but other than that rarely found a reason to leave Mark'sside. Everything was still up in the air, none of the doctors couldtell her whether or not Mark would come out of his coma, let alonelive.
Callie had tried to visit Mark, butseeing him was too much to take after Arizona's death. She knew itwasn't Mark's fault and she would never wish Mark dead under anycircumstance, but seeing him alive and knowing Arizona was dead wastoo much for her. She would let Derek bring Sofia in to sit with himand her dad when Derek went to visit his best friend.
None of the doctors pressured Callieto pull the plug, they knew how hard it would be for her to losesomeone else and everyone in the hospital had grown to put up withMark Sloan; some even liked him.
Some days were good, some were bad.Lexie, being her optimistic self, would constantly tell Mark'sdoctors she knew he would wake up, that she swore he spoke orsqueezed her hand. They'd give her a sympathetic smile or rub her armin a attempt to comfort her before saying how often they hear thesestatements from spouses of a comatose patient. But Lexie knew Mark, and she knew he would come out of this. They were meant to be.
Lexie's head perked up at the sound ofsomeone tapping on the open door. She let her eyes focus and lookedto see Derek standing at the door with a sympathetic smile.
"Is there any change?" He askedbefore stepping in and sitting opposite Lexie.
"No." She spoke quietly.
"He's too stubborn to let this beathim." Derek joked.
Lexie chuckled before she began tocry.
"I'm sorry I just keep crying." Shewaved it off.
"You're really in love with him, aren't you?" Derek asked, Lexie nodded in response as she began tocry even more.
Derek got up from his chair and walkedover to Lexie, hugging her tightly as she cried into his chest.
"I just want him to wake up." Lexiesobbed.
"So do I." Derek replied, tearsfilling his eyes as he looked over at his friend who was hooked up totubes and machines.
Within a week Mark had woken up andwas slowly, but surely, getting better. Lexie was beside him when hewoke up. He proposed the same day, professing his love for her fromhis hospital bed wasn't exactly what he had had in mind for proposingto her but he couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose herbefore he ever got to truly love her. After all, they were meant tobe.
