August 29th - Day 9 Continued

"What do you think they're talking about?" Yoko says, her eyes not moving from the table on the other side of the dining hall. You, Sana, Ms. Jeong, and Yoko, who made sure she is sitting as far from you as possible, sit at your own breakfast table, rather preoccupied by the ongoing conversation at the Choi family table.

"'Daddy, look at what I've done! I did it all for you!'" Ms. Jeong says sarcastically. "'Insu, I hate you, and I always will! You are the ruin of my life, and you ruined your own after marrying that witch you call your wife!'" It's then that Ms. Jeong sees Mrs. Choi passing by, her plate threatening to snap under her grip. "Miyoung, it's just a joke!" Ms. Jeong calls after her snickering.

"You two really have it out for one another." Yoko observes, nibbling on a piece of cheese.

"We don't. I'm sure she's pissed right now because I stole one of her friends... And well, I guess I called her a witch... Yoko, if you knew the things she'd done, you wouldn't feel so badly about it all."

"His grandfather doesn't seem to like him much, does he?" Sana says softly to you. You watch Soobin get ignored, his grandfather instead focused in on Yeonjun. Look who's the favorite now.

"Alright, well, I'm going to get a refill." Yoko says, finishing off her glass.

"You just want to get closer to hear them." Ms. Jeong says.

"The breakfast wine is good. What can I say?"

"I'll go with you." Sana pipes up, standing to leave with her mother.

"Honey, should you really be drinking this much?" Yoko says, starting to stumble towards the drink table.

"What did you do to Yoko? It's like water and oil when she's with you?" Ms. Jeong asks as soon as the pair are out of earshot.

"I asked her why she's with her scummy husband." You reply, sipping on your own breakfast wine. Hwa's right. This isn't so bad.

"I would've done the same." Ms. Jeong smiles. "Shortie, about that video..."

"I've thought about it. We can turn it in. If we get caught, we get caught, but we shouldn't have broken in–"

"You should delete it." Ms. Jeong states firmly.

"Then how..."

"I have a storage unit in Pittsburg. It has most of the important things I've...acquired. I'll confess to all I've done... Not to mention, I can send the police to find what was taken. That'll be proof enough." Your conversation is cut short by the return of the pair, and soon you're back to discussing the drama with the Chois.

"Sana won't do it?" Haeji asks, handing you back your paintbrush.

"No. She says that she doesn't want to be involved with the police. Her dad's been to jail before..." You answer, dipping the brush in paint before flicking it across your cardboard boulder.

"If you guys are right about all the people here, it sounds like you're going to have a hard time getting anyone to go on record, let alone someone who won't rat you out just for asking." Haeji frowns.

"I know... I'll figure it out." Your chest starts to tighten just thinking about the possibility that you might fail at all this. You try to shake off the feeling, changing the subject. "Speaking of getting involved with the police...what's the deal with that detective?" You ask her, and immediately she looks away from you.
