"Hey bhagwaan, ye ladki kitna soti hai,," My mother's voice reaches me, and I immediately sit up in bed, appearing as if I have been awake for an hour.
(Oh god, how much this girl sleeps.)
My mother enters my room and looks for my sister as she sleeps on her front, drooling on her pink pillow.
It has been a daily process since I can remember. My sister, Akriti, and I have been yin and yan for each other. I was the intelligent, anti-social, and quiet sister, whereas she was the outspoken, rude, and free one.
Our relatives always had problems with her because, like me and our parents, she never took shit from them.
"One more second, Maa," She groans, but Mumma takes her comforter and pulls her up by her ears.
Our mother, Suhana Mahavat, and father, Rakesh Mahavat, have been our ideal love relationship goals. He left his hometown and everything behind and became what he is today. His business is slowly growing, and he works day and night to give us a good life.
My mother was a billionaire princess, the only child of the infamous Raheja couple. But they disowned her when she stood against them for her love.
They have been trying to make amends ever since we were born.
"No more this laziness. Have you forgotten you have to pack your bags for your new school," Mumma says and puts our milk tumblers with some cookies on my bedside table.
"I have already packed my bags, Maa," I speak and put my head in her lap.
"I know, Aarya. I am talking about this idiot," She points at my sister and chuckles when she mockingly opens her mouth in shock.
"Kya?! Main?? Ye kaisa zulm hai, Maiya. Mujhse zyada mehenti koi nahi hai," Akriti starts her drama, making us chuckle at her childishness.
(Who?! Me?? It is cruelty, Mom. You won't find anybody more hardworking than me)
I sit straight and wink at her slightly before turning to Mumma, " I will help her. You don't worry," I assure her, and only after slapping the back of Akriti's head does she leave my room.
"Kya yaar, Dida. Bol dete na ki saath mein kar lenge. Ab yaha par bhi sab mujhe idiot samjhenge," Akriti groans as soon as Mumma leaves, plopping down on the bed beside me.
(Why did you do it, Di (Elder sister). You could've said that we would pack together. Here, too, everybody will start to think of me as an idiot)
I ruffle her hair and kiss her cheek, " You are the best person I have ever met, and the most intelligent one too. Nobody in their right mind would think that," I say and start instructing her to fold her clothes neatly in the suitcase.
I remember the old days when Dad's business was not going well.
We had nothing with us. It was a small room where our mom cooked, and we all slept on the floor. But my father never for a second gave up.
"Where are you lost, Di?" Akriti asks as we pack her belongings in suitcases.
"Nothing. I am wondering how far we have come. From a small village in UP to here, the best academy in India," I sigh, planning my study schedule again.
Like my father, I want to pursue business, too, but I have a knack for science.
So my Dad proposed that I study science because business requires brain and talent, not degrees.
So here I am, in my 11th standard, with Biology as my major.
"I know you are having wet dreams about your books but please, Di, help me before our mother kills me," She pleads, making me gasp at her language.
