The whole idea of the end of the world had seemed quite far away for Max. He thought that when people imagined sick folks sharing their virus, it was just a funny way of talking about the flu. That nothing could happen to them where he lived. But now he knew that he had been wrong. It was probably the same for the others. Daniel was his right-hand man, his other half, whom he'd met on the battlefield. Even if this abandoned shopping mall didn't look anything like a war zone. Everything was abandoned anyway, especially everything that had started to deteriorate since life had come to an end.

It had been two years since the apocalypse had begun, and Max still hoped that everything would eventually return to normal. He wanted his quiet life back, his apartment with his two cats and his partner. His regular missions abroad. But it was all gone. Meeting Daniel had been a breath of fresh air, he who had begun alone had finally found himself with someone. They probably hadn't had the same life, but that was so long ago that it hardly mattered. Everything had been destroyed. It had all been climate change at first: storms, earthquakes, and the creation of a new city to protect the government. Despite his Cartesian mind, Max had thought of aliens. Wenloria was a land of peace, its meadows, fields and cities had all shown the power of man. What would aliens have found here?

He'd met Daniel at the very beginning of the apocalypse, and he knew a lot more than he did. He'd fled the last healthy city to protect himself, Max hadn't understood, but then the answer had seemed obvious. Wenloria was overpopulated. Poverty was on the rise. Daniel had told him about his life in the slums, where they used the carcasses of military trucks to make houses for themselves, in the streets beneath the buildings Max lived in. They hadn't had the same life before the apocalypse, but that didn't matter now. They had to survive. He had to survive, they surely weren't the only survivors.

I couldn't resist, so here's the first chapter of this project based on the "apocalypse" TikToks I made! It'll probably take me a while to post the next chapter, but it's dear to me so comment to let me know what you'd like to see!
