The first week of school flew by in a blur of introductions, classroom rules, and assignments. Meera found herself more interested in observing her classmates than actually engaging with them. She learned their quirks, their cliques, and their routines. Shamma, the seemingly popular girl, often hung out with a group of equally fashionable friends, while the mysterious girl at the back, Salama, continued to remain a mystery, always absorbed in her iPad doing god knows what.

Meera couldn't shake off the curiosity about Salama. She found herself glancing over more often than she would admit, intrigued by her silent presence. It was during one of these stolen glances that she noticed something unusual. "Hey, do you know anything about that girl?" Meera asked her desk mate, Anika, during lunch break. Anika looked over her shoulder, following Meera's gaze. "Oh, her? That's Salama. She's kind of a mystery. No one really talks to her. She's always drawing or something on her iPad." Meera nodded, absorbing the information. "Salama.. Even her name sounded poetic." Thought Meera to herself.

Later that day, while Meera was at her locker, she heard a familiar voice behind her. "Hey, um... Meera, right?" She turned around to see Shamma, the popular girl, standing there with a curious smile. "Yeah, that's me. What's up?" Shamma inspected her nails casually. "I was wondering if you could help me with the history homework? I saw you taking notes in class, and I'm kind of lost." Surprised by the request, Meera agreed. "Sure, I can help you with that."

As they walked towards the library together, Meera felt a strange connection forming. Shamma wasn't what she had initially assumed. She was friendly but in a guarded, slightly condescending way. As they worked through the homework, Shamma offered backhanded compliments. "You're really smart, Meera. I wish I had that much free time to study," she remarked, her tone just on the edge of sincere.

"Hey, have you noticed Salama?" Meera blurted out during a pause in their conversation. Shamma looked thoughtful. "Yeah, she's my cousin, but she's so quiet, it's like she doesn't want anyone to notice her." Meera's curiosity grew. "Do you think she'd mind if we talked to her?" Shamma shrugged. "I guess we could try. She's just really shy. But hey, if she's too weird, we can always leave, right?" she said with a mischievous grin.

The next day, during lunch, Meera and Shamma approached Salama's table. Meera's heart pounded in her chest. "Hey, Salama, mind if we sit here?" Salama looked up, surprised, but nodded. "Sure." The conversation started awkwardly, with Shamma leading the talk with playful, slightly biting comments, but soon Meera found herself distracted by Salama's beauty, her voice, everything about her was just.. perfect. They talked about their favorite artists, and Salama even showed them some of her digital sketches. The walls Salama had built around herself began to crumble, and Meera realized that the girl she had been so curious about was not only talented but also incredibly kind and thoughtful.

As the weeks passed, the three girls grew closer. Meera found herself looking forward to school, excited to spend time with her new friends. Shamma's confident, slightly mean humor and Salama's quiet strength balanced her own insecurities. They became an unlikely trio, supporting each other through the ups and downs of school life.

One day, after school, the three of them sat on the grass outside, watching the sunset. Meera looked at her friends, feeling a warmth she hadn't felt in a long time. "You know, I thought this year was going to be horrible. But it's turning out to be pretty amazing." Shamma laughed. "Yeah, who would've thought? You're not as boring as I first thought, Meera." Salama smiled, her eyes reflecting the orange light of the setting sun. "Sometimes, the best things happen when you least expect them."

Meera nodded, feeling a sense of belonging. For the first time, she felt like she had found her place, surrounded by friends who understood her. And she knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together.
