THERE WERE FEW THINGS in her life that Azula couldn't obtain, with all the power she possessed. But til her very last breath, love was the one thing she could never grab hold of. Azula was a woman to be respected and feared. She was on her way to becoming the Crown Princess of the Fire Nation. And yet, she had never once tasted love.
Her own mother couldn't bear to embrace her as she was — how could an outsider? Azula didn't need things like love or friendship. All she needed was to be the pride of Ozai, the Princess her nation admired, no, revered. That was enough. Of course, it stung to be betrayed by her closest allies. But that was nothing compared to having all the things she swore she didn't care for be stolen by her brother — her sweet, naive, weak brother — Zuko. He had already once stolen their mother's affections from her. Then he stole away her friends, her father, and her nation, too.
It was after she lost everyone she held any sort of affections for that Azula realised her mother was wrong. Azula was human, too. She craved affection and warmth, just like anyone else. But it was the very act of striving for perfection ( so she could be worth something, so she could mean something to someone ) that pushed people away from her.
The stronger she became, the more people feared her. The harder she worked, the more her father grew wary. Ozai had never loved Azula. But he had always needed her. But now that the end of the war was near, so was Azula's usefulness. He would have it all. And with the world under his command, all Azula had become was a threat to his position and a reminder of his failed marriage.
