AZULA WAS TRAPPED IN the stomach of a whale. No, seriously.
She went through a lot of pain after she ran away from the Fire Nation. Many people recognised and hated her. It wasn't long before she died. No amount of bending could help a teenage girl escape the hatred of the entire world. Not when Azula was too tired to fight back. But her life was far from the end of her struggles. Most people passed away and then began a new cycle of life and rebirth soon after entering the Spirit World.
But something about Azula wasn't right. The cycle wouldn't restart for her, no matter how much she hoped it would. She resented the Fire Nation, she resented Ozai and Ursa and Zuko and Iroh and everyone that got their happy ending while she got the short end of the stick. She resented so much that her spirit physically couldn't transform and begin anew.
Then she heard of the ancient spirit, Kaal. A legendary spirit, far older than even Raava and Vaatu themselves. The spirit made an appearance every five-hundred years in the depths of the Spirit World's most darkest regions. It was the most dangerous trip Azula could have chosen to make. But even in death, Azula did not fear. She may be unwanted by even rebirth, but she was not incapable.
