*Hey Wattpaders! Please note this chapter has a few swear words*
"We are what?!"
I burst out, shocked and surprised at his words. The men in the room all turned to me and stared, confused.
I looked at Thad, hard. He sighted and waved a hand at me, his sign that he'd explain later. I gave him a look as he spoke again.
"As I was saying, Over the last few days, Stoven and I have searched the city for supplies and he has gathered information from overhearing those Government guards." He grinned. "And it turns out there is a special force safekeeping a bunker. That bunker contains a year's worth of supplies for the Government and the army."
He paused, a smile on his lips as the bulky men gasped. His eyes rested on me. Thad nodded to the Scandinavian and mentioned him forwards. Stoven proudly walked to the front of the room and planted himself next to Thad, his legs apart and stood arrogantly, his weight balanced slightly backwards. I grimaced.
His strong accented voice boomed around the room, unlike Thad's calm and soothing voice:
"We are going to prepare our weapons today. We raid the bunker tomorrow. We want all of you to gather as many men as you can, if you haven't already." His cold gaze swept the room and stopped on me for a second.
"We will be waiting for each one of you at midday in this room, so we can go over the bunker's plans together." He paused, then grinned. "Then we'll have a training session all together, and we'll see you at dawn tomorrow."
He dismissed the room with a sign of the hand and the men stomped past me, as I waited, arms crossed, observing Stoven and frowning.
After Thad and Stoven had debriefed, Stoven left the room and Thad looked towards me, smiling proudly.
His face darkened as he saw my face. He walked towards me as I mocked him.
"I'm fully convinced you never graduated kinder-garden." His face froze for a second before he burst out laughing.
"Oh, you're in a good mood today!" I spat out.
"Rae, Rae, Rae..." He took my hand. "Relax." He ginned as I stepped away from him.
"Okay ...Fine! I'm sorry I didn't tell you about the supplies, but..." I interrupted him with a smirk.
"Oh, I don't care about that! I already knew you were a dumbass, but how could you plan all of this with that...guy!" I tried to stay calm but I exploded. "Haven't you even listened to what I said yesterday? I told you you can't trust anyone and what do you do? Plan some stupidly dangerous raid with a stranger and you invite an army of soldiers that, one, are stronger than us, two, have freaking weapons, three, are outnumbering us, and four, we don't even know were they come from!"
Thad frowned and waited for me to finish. He took me by the shoulders and sighted, rubbing his face in his hands. I suddenly felt so tired. I stepped away from him again and I defeatedly addressed him: "Do whatever you want... I...I don't even care any-more."
I turned my back to him and before I walked out of the room, I predicted:
"And just so you know...I think this," I gestured towards the crates. "thing you're planning...is going to go very badly..."
Shit. I thought as I bolted out of the bunker, grabbing my vest and two strips of fabric we stored in the weapons room.
Checking the surroundings, I tightly wrapped the fabric around my fists and ran to the outskirts of the city. It was strange running in the streets instead of on the rooftops. I felt uneasy, as if anyone could see me, or follow me. I knew the rooftops even better than the bunker at this point.
I headed towards the city's outskirts and as I walked further and further away from the city centre, more and more plants overgrew on buildings and greenery blocked the streets. I stayed hidden in the shadows, moving fast but silently. I finished wrapping the fabric tightly around my knuckles as I arrived in a small park that was hidden from sight thanks to the tall buildings and the dark trees. I breathed in deeply, gathering the anger that had built up over the past few days and fell into position.
I prepared my stance, brought my knuckles in front of my face, and punched. My fists hit the makeshift boxing bag with a muffled bang, the heavy sac went flying as I quickly focused my anger into an energy source that powered the bare strength of my arms.
As I headed back into the city, as sudden shudder came over the streets. I stopped and looked. I hadn't noticed the sky was as black as coal.
Oh.
I started running towards our shelter just as the first hailstone fell to the ground. It seemed as if the atmosphere had been cut in two, the air was thick and droplets of water felt charged with electricity.
The Sound shook the ground, buildings bent down as the earth screamed. Stones fell on the streets, windows shattered and cracks violently opened on the paths. I jumped away from the middle of the street, ran through the city avoiding stones, debris and the hail. I finally reached the bunker, breathless.
Everyone was inside, the noise was deafening. I ran through the crowd, feeling hot, searching for Mia, Lily, Hazel and Thad. Finally, I found Mia, standing with the girls in a corner, looking, searching the crowd around them. When Mia saw me she brightened and let out a relieved sight.
"Rae! I'm so glad you're back! I was worried for you." I smiled
"Are you OK? As soon as the Sound started, I ran back." I looked at the ceiling and the floor around us. "Did anything collapse?"
Mia shook her head.
"No, thank god. I think it was worse around the northern perimeter of town." She paused, "At least that's what they're saying..." She signalled towards where Thad and Stoven were talking.
"They said there is a...helicopter ready..."
I frowned.
So we really are doing this then?!
"I'll get ready for tomorrow, then..." I said, thoughtfully. "Are you coming too, Mia?"
She nodded and we all left the room and started packing our bags.
After they were all packed, Mia touched my shoulder and whispered:
"Everything's going to be okay, Rae."
I smiled sadly and nodded.
No it won't...I have a bad feeling.
