It was her secondth birthday and her parents where at a meeting with the Order, bringing her along with Harry and the Potters, who were best friends with her parents.
"You know what I've been thinking?" Lily Potter said to Jane, her mother.
"What?" Jane asked curiously.
"We should bond our babies." Jane's face was undoubtedly a surprised one. She was not expecting that at all. "Obviously it depends if you're okay with it. Since they are babies, they won't be able to agree or disagree and they are both strong enough to go through it."
"But it will hurt them while we bond them." Jane noted, making Lily nod.
"Yeah, it will for a moment. But again, they are babies, so it won't last too long and in the future I'm sure we'll be happy we did it."
"Why though? Wouldn't it be better if they are just best friends like you and I?" Jane asked.
"Of course, hopefully that will be the case too. But I feel like my son needs someone that will always be there for him. So even if they fight, they will always be attracted back to each other and defend each other whenever they need it."
Jane thought about it for a moment but she couldn't really think of a bond that would work with the details that her friend Lily is giving. "I'm not sure there's a bond for that..."
"Oh there is, I've searched it with James. It's called Soul Bond Ritual. It's light magic so you don't have to worry about it being dark or turning our kids dark. It's full of light and love, specially since our intentions would be good and pure."
Jane thought more and more about it and she couldn't see anything bad with it. It would be nice to have an assurance that her daughter won't be alone in hard times. If anything is to happen to her or her husband, at least Jane will know that her daughter will never be alone.
"I'll have to talk to Peter about it, but I think he'll agree."
"I'll agree with what?" Peter asked as he came to the conversation, putting his arms around his wife's waist, pulling her closer to him.
"Oh, um-"
"James and I have been researching and we would love it if our kids could be bonded by their souls. That way, they will always have each other no matter what." Lily explained again, she was very passionate about the topic so she didn't mind explaining it herself again.
Jane could feel Peter's surprise. "Is it safe though? Aren't they too little for that?"
"Well, we are in the middle of a war Peter. I think now is the perfect time to do it."
James came to the conversation again, getting the topic as soon as he heard his wife. "Oh, are you talking about bonding our babies?" Lily nodded and James smiled at the idea. "I think it's for the best. We don't know what the future holds, but the least we can do is know that our kids will be there for each other."
Peter and Jane look at each other. Jane felt her heart racing a bit at the thought, something seemed off but she couldn't help but agree. It was her best friend suggesting it, so surely if she knew something bad was going to happen, she would tell her. Right?
"I'm okay with it. Are you?" Jane asked her husband. He was also a bit hesitant, feeling like there were missing pieces. But if his wife agreed, then nothing bad would happen, right?
"Sure." Peter tried his best to smile and it worked because the others didn't noticed.
"Perfect, we can ask Dumbledore to do it so we know it's safe." Lily said happily as she went to hug Jane. Jane returned the hug, feeling a bit more at ease.
"Should we do it now?" James asked. "It's your daughter's birthday after all, I think there's no better gift than a soul bond."
Well, if they think more about it, they won't agree. Better now than never. Thought Jane.
"Okay, let's do it." Jane said and they all stood up with baby Harry in Lily's arms and Jane's daughter in her arms. They were surprisingly calm, so that made everything a lot easier.
"Dumbledore, can we ask you a favor?" Lily asked, interrupting Dumbledore from a conversation. However, since it was the Potters, he didn't mind. They've been part of the Order for as long as he can remember.
"Of course. I'm all ears." He replied as he also said hello to Harry and Jane's baby. "Oh wait, isn't it your daughter's birthday Jane?" Jane nodded while smiling making Dumbledore smile as well. "Happy life little Jane!"
"So, I had an idea and we all agreed that we want to bond our babies souls." Lily said, taking Dumbledore by surprise as well, but he probably does know everything about it. At least more than what Jane and Peter knew.
"Are you sure about it? Once it's done, there's no going back." Dumbledore explained. Making Jane's heart rate accelerate once again.
"Yes. James and I want our son to feel loved. We are in the middle of the war that we have no idea what's going to happen next. We want to make sure that at least our Harry will feel loved." Dumbledore nodded and agreed almost immediately.
"Very well, let's get started then, shall we?" The four nodded and joined the babies, putting them side by side. As if from destiny, the babies hold hands making everyone awe. "I think this is a clear sign that you're making the right decision."
It felt as though, Dumbledore was only talking to Lily and James, because he didn't look at Jane nor Peter.
Dumbledore took out his wand and started the ritual. "At this full moon night, I bond Harry James Potter and Evelyn Jane Finley soul's, so they may always find warmth and comfort in each other, through the good or the bad, so they may never be alone."
The light that produced the ritual was a very bright orange, almost yellow, and almost immediately, the babies started to cry, indicating that the effect was working and they were being bonded. However, there was indeed a puzzle piece missing.
"The first part is over." Dumbledore said, taking Jane by surprise. She wanted to ask what was the other part that was missing, but she decided against it. Everyone else looked confident so she felt like the weird one if she asked.
Either way, she didn't have the time, because just as that happened, they were notified of an attack not far away from Dumbledore's place.
"Everyone, back to your homes and stay safe. I'll go with Kingsley, Alice, John and Moody. It's not safe right now."
