Net POV:
I was looking at the wall clock while walking back and forth in the hospital hallway. My wife is giving birth to our first child, a boy. I can't explain what I'm feeling at this moment; I'm sweating and a mix of joy and nervousness overwhelms me because we will finally see him. Both my wife and I are eagerly waiting to see our child, and I am grateful that he is a boy because he will carry my surname. If it were a girl, it wouldn't matter to us. Whatever the gender of our child, we will wholeheartedly accept it because it is a gift from our love and also from God.
It's 10:30 in the evening when the door of the room where my wife is giving birth opens, but I couldn't read the message on the doctor's face,But when he comes near me I see his face was distraught.
"Are you Mrs. Manithikhun's husband?" the doctor asked.
"Yes, I am. How is my wife?" I asked, noticing his furrowed brow.
"Mr., I regret to inform you that..." before the doctor could finish his sentence, I interrupted even if he can't say anything I felt his heaviest in his simple word, "Inform me of what, doc?" I asked , tears welling up in my eyes and my voice trembling. The doctor hadn't answered yet when my parents and Jane's parents and family, suddenly arrived.
They were puzzled why I was crying, and my mother-in-law asked the doctor, "Doctor, what happened? How is my grandchild and my daughter?"
"Please forgive us, we did everything we could, but your daughter couldn't make it. However, the child survived. He's in the incubator and being monitored. I'm sorry, please excuse me," the doctor said before leaving. It felt like my world collapsed when I heard that.
I rushed to the room where my wife was.I approached her, removed the sheet covering her face, and embraced her tightly. My whole body was weak, and I hugged her tightly while tears streamed down my face, looking at a lifeless body covered with a white sheet.
"Honey, wake up. Please wake up. Your child needs you,I need you too. Please don't joke like this; wake up," I said, sobbing.
Her mother approached me and said, "Son, as painful as it is for us to lose her, there's nothing we can do. Let's stay strong for your child. Your child needs you."while her voice was trembling in crying.
I looked at her, and she hugged me, saying, "God has a plan for you. Everything that happened is destined for her and for all of us left behind."
I stayed in the room while they went to see our child in the incubator in the private room.
I held my wife's lifeless hand, crying. It's hard to accept; we had many plans for us and to our child. I kissed her hand, even though it was cold, while still crying.
I was startled when someone tapped on my shoulder, "Sir, we will now take Manithikhun's body." I realized I had fallen asleep while holding my wife's hand. I stood up, kissed her forehead, and watched as they covered her body with a sheet and slowly took her out of the room.
It felt like my heart was being torn apart as I watched her body being taken away from me. I couldn't control myself, so I ran after them and hugged her one last time. The men taking her (to the morgue to be cremated )couldn't do anything as I embraced her for the final moment.
I opened the sheet and hugged her, whispering, "Honey, always watch over us and come back to us soon. I love you so much." I covered her body with the sheet and said, "Sir, you can take her now," and the man nodded, pulling the bed with my wife's body.
Unable to look at them, I went to my child's room. As soon as I entered, I couldn't hold back my tears as I watched my child sleeping inside the incubator. I approached and said, "Son, Papa is here. Be strong. Mama and I love you very much."
My parents arrived and said, "Son, rest for a while. I know you're tired of everything that happened. Be strong for your child."
I lay on the couch in my child's private room while my in-laws took care of the bills and paperwork at the hospital.
Next morning, we went home with my wife's ashes in an urn that I held tightly. We held a wake at my house, and our relatives, friends, and colleagues came to pay their respects.
My brother Thomas and our cousin Kim were at the hospital, taking care of my child.
We buried her urn near the temple after a few ceremonies, and the attendees gradually left until I was alone. When everyone had gone, I lay down where she was buried, imagining she was just lying next to me. I didn't realize I had fallen asleep until I suddenly woke up to what felt like water dripping. As I got up, I felt the rain pouring down. Along with the raindrops, tears streamed from my eyes as I bid farewell to the grave. I got into the car, started it, and continued to cry as I drove.
Upon arriving home, my mother instructed me to take a shower to avoid getting sick. After bathing, my mother knocked on the door with warm rice and soup.
"Come, my child. Eat this food I brought, then take your medicine to avoid catching a cold. Get stronger; your child will be back here tomorrow," she said as she set the food on the table.
I nodded, ate, took the medicine, and went to sleep. The next morning, I woke up to noise downstairs, even though my room was on the third floor. I checked the time; it was already 10 in the morning, so I got up. When I went downstairs, I was surprised to see my in-law and my child dancing, and when mom saw me, she smiled.
"Look, son, hold your child,"she handed me the baby. Carefully and lovingly, I held him in my arms. When I saw his face, I couldn't help but cry and said, "Son, I'm here, I'm your dad. Even though mom is no longer here, she always watches over us at all times. We're still together, taking care of you well," as I kissed his cheek. I noticed tears in the eyes of the people around me as they smiled.
