Lester's pov
I had just dragged the last of the roadkill out my truck when I looked in and saw (y/n) fast asleep in the passenger seat, she looked too peaceful to wake so I climbed back in the truck careful not to wake her and headed home. Stopping at a quick fast food place that was on the way like I said so she can have something when she's awake.
Carefully driving over the bumpy road I heard a small sound come from (y/n) I quickly looked over and saw her shuffle some in order to get more comfortable before her eyes fluttered open."Hey we're almost there," I held up the leftovers in the bag , " got ya a burger and fries to eat too figured you were hungry." I smiled sitting the bag by her.
"I told you you didn't have to do that," I could hear the smile in her voice as she opened the bag.
We rode in silence for another half hour before we came to the washed up road. "Stay right here I gotta flip my tires so we can get over this washed out area." I told her hopping out and flipping my tires. After I had them flipped I wait a minute thinking, we can't kill this one she's too precious for this world and too precious to get involved with our ways but she can't be thrown out into the world again not after what's happened to her.
"Do you need a hand?" I heard her call as she tried opening the truck door.
"No no hon just had to take a leak figured I'd do it away from the truck!" I called back to her mentally facepalming myself.Climbing back into the truck I started it up again and slowly went over the washed out road.
(Y/n)'s pov
Fiddling with my sleeves I watched as the sun went completely down as we drove another 20 minutes into a small town. It looked like something off of the cover of one of my favorite books.
"We live up in that house on the hill it's the off season so there's no workers in town won't be for probably two or three months, but they're probably asleep now they've been up before sunrise so just make sure to be quiet," Lester told me as he drove us up the gravel driveway. No other vehicles was infront of the house which made Lester sigh in relief as he got out and open my door.
"The spare bedroom is full of stuff you can take the couch downstairs for now and I'll get your stuff out for ya in a minute but let's get you inside and get that ankle elevated," he said offering me his hand as I struggled to get out of the truck without tearing my dress.
Quickly Les got me up the porch steps holding my waist as I held onto the railing so I wouldn't fall and opened the door. Thats when a dog started barking before running out right past us and into the town."Thats just Daisy (my dogs name) she's really sweet probably been inside all day tho," Les explained as he helped me inside and got me on the couch frowning as I winced with every step.
"Here stay right here," Les told me as he propped my ankle up on a foot rest and headed to what I assumed was the kitchen. My eyes were starting to grow heavy again as he walked back in with an ice pack wrapped in a towel and what looked like a cup of water."Bo my oldest brother knows more about broken bones he can look at it better in the morning," Les said as he gently lifted my skirt to just Afew inches above my ankle and tied the ice pack to it before putting my skirt back in place, before silently getting up and grabbing a blanket out of a nearby closet and a pillow out of an armchair.
"If you need anything knock three times on that table beside you and I'll be right down," Les said as he smiled and pointed at the end table by the couch before walking up a set of stairs to the second floor.I couldn't help but smile as he walked away, for the first time in my life I felt completely safe.
