"Oh, no! Where in the world did I put my cellphone? Oh well, can't look for it now," Maria murmured.
Then a pain of guilt traveled over her and decided that it be best if she found it, because if her father called and she didn't answer, he might send out the Army to find her. She reached under her chair, first, and felt it.
"Aha!" When she picked up her phone, she saw that it was still on. "Strange, I didn't call anyone," she thought to herself. She pressed the hang up button, but as soon as she did the phone rang again, which scared her and almost caused her to drop it.
"Hi, papi," she said.
"Mi hija, are you ok?" Her father asked her.
"Dad! I'm fine,"she said with a sigh.
"Okay, good, cause there is something I want to tell you. I don't think you will be happy when I tell you," her father said hesitantly.
"Daddy, spit it out...Wait...what have you done?" She said narrowing her eyes. She knew her father was up to good. "Whatever it is daddy, I'm sure I'll get over it," she mentally sighed.
"Well...I was concerned about your safety, especially after recent events here. So I sent my partner to follow you from Ohio to here, New York City," he said rapidly, while holding his breath waiting for her to respond.
"Geez...My goodness...wow....I'm speechless," I said flabbergasted. "However, I am a little bit upset, because it's creepy and not right. But I understand that you love me." There was no point in getting upset with him, plus she could use some looking after right now.
"So what color is the car your partner is in, what does it look like?" she asked while looking in her rearview mirror.
"I believe he has a Cherokee Jeep, red or blue, not sure. He's about 6'2", brown hair, tanned or olive skin..." he replied.
"Yup that's him, saw him early ( and a very fine specimen). And he's following me, " I said, thinking back to the man I saw in the parking lot.
"I'm really sorry I didn't tell you before but I didn't want you to refuse and I didn't want you to argue with me on this matter, " he said softly.
"Wait, you said because of recents events unfolding or happening around you. What's going on, Manuel?" I said with concern and a little agitated. I hate being kept in the dark.
"Ok...I was going to wait until you got here to tell you. But we have a lead on Raul! However, we are checking on it now, you know to make sure it's not a dead end," he responded.
"Well...continue. What's the lead?" I said while waving one hand in the air.
"Sorry Maria, when you get here I'll fill you in. It's easier and safer that way."
I felt bad and just decided to just be patient and wait until I see him for him to explain further. "Ok daddy," i said smiling briefly.
"Look Maria, do me one favor in return?"
"Sure, what is it."
"Please be nice to the detective behind you. He doesn't have it quite that easy with me. The one who is tailing you now, " He said patiently.
Sigh. "Of course daddy," I said.
"So next time you stop to fill up, just walk over and talk to him," he said questioningly.
"Sure, daddy. I have to go now. I'll call you when I get closer. Love you."
"Ok," was all he responded before he hung up.
I sighed while hanging up. Realizing not for the first time that Raul's kidnapping had changed everything in my family and that's why we needed him back, the sooner the better.
