Hendrix Ames
bronx, ny | 8:30am"So you're going to be home late again?" My mom asked as she drove me to school.
"Yeah, art club again." Despite being away from my friends and other family from moving to the Bronx... for the past two weeks the art club has given me something to look forward to three days a week.
I enjoyed drawing and hearing the conversations of those around me. I liked the small conversations I had with Avari, who was the only person I spoke to in this school.
I wasn't complaining about the lack of friends I had made so far, I wasn't really interested in making friends here. If someone spoke to me, I responded. But I enjoyed staying to myself and getting my things done.
It was weird though, only talking to Avari. Not because I didn't enjoy speaking to her because I did.
It was weird because in my last school I never talked to any girls. My friend group was all boys and the girls I did talk to were in passing. There were girls that had approached me, but I was never interested in pursuing them.
So it was crazy that it's my third week going to school over here and the only person I speak to is a girl.
I kind of looked forward to seeing her because it was the only time I really spoke to someone. We mainly just talked about art or schoolwork, which I didn't mind because it was nice to talk about regular things.
"You made any friends yet?" I contemplated telling her about Avari but we weren't really friends so it didn't make sense.
"Nah, but it's okay mom. I enjoy being by myself."
"Hendrix..." she said, trailing off.
"I promise I'm fine."
"One friend by the end of the school year Hendrix. Non-negotiable."
"Why are you so adamant about me finding a friend?"
"Because people need connection. And if we're going to be up here you're going to need friends like you did in Brooklyn." I really hate talking about Brooklyn in pastence.
I just sighed and stayed quiet for the remainder of the drive to school.
"But Hendrix, be good, I love you." She said, as we pulled up to the front of school.
"Love you too, bye." I replied before stepping out into the cold and making my way into the school.
I walked upstairs to my history classroom, seeing that there was a paper on the door.
It read: Mr.Richard's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd period class go to the cafeteria
Not gone lie, I wasn't feeling to learn about anymore of the world's human experiments so I was happy to not have class.
I walked downstairs to the cafeteria which looked only mildly filled with people from the outside so it definitely wasn't going to be hard to find a seat.
Once I stepped inside I tried to avoid all the stares I somehow still got. It was funny though because even though it had been almost 3 weeks, no one had talked to me other than Avari. They just loved staring.
