Helene's P.O.V
I didn't look behind me as I ran, but I could feel that he was near, probably hot on my trail. Panting heavily, I pumped my legs faster, willing myself to pick up my speed. He was gaining on me, and fast, since his wolf was significantly larger than mine, and was obviously stronger.
Honey wanted to take control, but I stopped her, since I knew she wouldn't be immune to the mate bond, and would most likely trot towards his wolf the second she has the chance. I tried to block out the sounds of everything around me–the crunching of leaves beneath my feet and the chatters of the forest–focusing only on getting myself as far away from him as possible.
Speaking of him, I didn't know why I ran, but one thing I knew was that I wanted to have some time–alone–to make sense of the situation I was in. But, it seemed that no matter what, he wouldn't leave me alone.
I didn't even know why he would act that way. He was one of the strongest wolves in the whole werewolf world–and possibly the entire supernatural world, if other species exist–so why couldn't he overcome a simple mate bond?
I've heard stories about how a wolf would be complete with their mate, since they were a wolf's "other half", or "soulmate" if that even exists.
Even though I can't deny that there is an unknown force pulling me to him, like two magnets of different poles. Maybe that is what we're like. Two opposite forces, with contrasting, well, everything, drawn to each other because of a mate bond.
Maybe our differences are the reason that draws us together, but pull us apart. How could we be mates? We were so different. He was cruel, I was not. He was the dark–cold, brooding, and unpredictable–while I was the opposite. We were as different as night and day; so how–why did the moon goddess pair us together? Why couldn't I just have a decent mate who could love me and take care of me like Keith did?
Panting heavily, I slowed to a stop, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. I was too absorbed in my own thoughts that I haven't even realized that I had gone too far–possibly even out of the Waning Crescent territory!
The smell was strangely unfamiliar, almost putrid, making my snout wrinkle in disgust. It could only mean one thing–I was on no-man's land, where rogues roam freely.
I swiveled my head around, trying to pick up where I came from so I could return back to the borders, but I couldn't make out any scents except for my own. Had I gone that far?
However, before I could trace my way back, the leaves around me rustled. My hackles immediately rose, as I let out a low growl. It wasn't just the wind. Someone was out there. I let Honey take full control, while I hang close by, watching the scene from the side.
A snarl erupted from her throat as the leaves rustled again, this time close. Soon after, five wolves emerged from the thicket, teeth bared and ears flattened against their head. From their strong and bulky build, I could tell that they were all male.
We wouldn't stand a chance against all of them, especially when we were significantly smaller in size. They knew that as well, because they stalked closer, seemingly unafraid. Honey growled again when one of them seemed to be sneering at her.
What are the chances of us out-running them? I asked nervously. We can try, Honey answered. But they're fast. The leader especially. And we have been running for the past hour already. Is that a no then? I winced. Seems like we have to fight our way out of here. Can you handle this? She didn't answer.
Licorice is near. I can feel him. We just have to hold them off long enough until he arrives, she informs me. Licorice? I echoed, as the wolves started to circle around her mockingly.
