CHAPTER 1: TWO WORDS
"His eyes are the windows to his soul"
The rain pattered on Azure's dorm room window while she sat reading for her ethics class. Her eyes followed the page, eyeing one word and then the other. She tried her best to concentrate on the sentence before her but her mind wandered off to other topics. The fall semester was lonely and cold & to make matters worse her roommate was never there. Most people would love to have a room to themselves but Azure enjoyed the companionship. Another person in the room kept her from being constantly consumed by her thoughts. Azure did not think of herself as the most outgoing person because it was somewhat hard for her to make friends. She had acquaintances but full blown friends were few and in between for her.
People in her dorm called her "the quiet one" but that did not stop them from coming to her for advice. Everyone thought she was a good listener. Granted, she was but Azure was tired of giving advice to everyone. No one ever asked her if she was in the right frame of mind to give advice or if she herself wanted to talk. They just dumped their problems on her and she was left to pick up the emotional pieces for not only them but herself also.
Azure had ventured three sentences further down the page when she decided she needed a break. Closing her book, she got up from her desk and went to sit on her bed which stood four feet from the ground. Her side of the room was decorated in a pantone yellow while her roommate's side was aqua blue. The two colors complemented each other well. The bright hues helped boost Azure's spirits when she was feeling anxious. Azure sighed to herself as she jumped up on her bed hitting her head on her wall in the process. Her had shot up quickly to soothe the aching feeling on her temple. Azure looked around her room trying to process her conjumbled feelings. Sometimes she wondered if she made the right decision coming here. She moved ten hours away from her hometown in Colorado to go to Bluecove university. She missed her family tremendously but she knew if she did not take a leap of faith and move away, she would have stayed in that town forever. Azure was okay with comfortability, in fact she was in love with it. Because of this, she knew she needed to leave. She needed that motivational push from herself to make her family proud.
Azure was the first person in her family to go away to college. Sometimes she thought she would be the end all to the lower-middle class stain that had been on her family for generations and then, instead, she would manifest generational wealth for her kin all by herself. She knew it was nearly impossible for one person to do but she had high hopes. Her family had put everything they had into her success and she wanted to reward them, even if it meant staying up all hours of the night to study for an exam or staying in a night while everyone else was partying. Azure signed once again, she felt the tears puddle on the edge of her eyes. Azure was aware of the rare opportunity she had here in Bluecrest Cove.
Full merit scholarship, dorm priority housing and honor college student.
She felt stupid for crying. Here she was crying about the pressures of being in college and away from her family while some people were not afforded the opportunity to even step foot on a college campus, let alone attend one. She wiped the tears from her eyes as she thought about the position she was in.
"Get it together Azure" she thought to herself. She picked a tissue up from her nightstand and wiped her eyes dry. Although a little incling in the back of her mind told her she was allowed to feel overwhelmed. However, Azure ignored it. She used her stepping stool to get down from her high bed. Walking back to her desk, she opened back up her ethics textbook and got back to work.
Two hours had passed and Azure finally was done with her work. She was relieved and felt confident about her exam tomorrow. Her eyes traveled to her clock. It read 6:20pm. Her roomate should have been back by now. They had a system. If one was going to be late, they would text each other to make sure everything was okay. Azure looked around the room for her phone. It wasn't on her nightstand or desk. She got up from her spot in her desk chair and walked to her bed. There she spotted it under her favorite quilt her Grandma had made her before she came to Ocean Haven. Azure was surprised to see she had so many notifications.
