Chapter 36
Three weeks after the tour and the decision Cara made to return to the Ruby Throne, Jasmine and Elma were standing near the shore of Lake Ilinata, about to begin fishing. They turned in response to a nearby sound and spotted Cara and Serana approaching after having arrived via portal.
"Um..." Elma said as she motioned toward the crown.
"Yeah. I was coronated last week. I thought I'd come and tell you, since we talked about it so much in Sovngarde."
"Has it been a hassle so far?" Jasmine questioned.
"Not yet. I expect it to. Word is getting out that I'm back on the throne. Some of the factions that Helena was having trouble with have gone silent, due to my reputation. Some others have already begun to make noise, because they're unfamiliar with me. It is what it is," Cara said with a shrug.
"And some others have decided that since everyone now knows she's immortal..." Serana began as Cara rolled her eyes.
"What? What am I missing here?" Elma asked, her mouth curling into a grin.
"What you're missing is that some idiots have already begun worshiping me," Cara muttered.
"And..." Serana stated with a smirk, causing Cara to sigh.
"And?" Jasmine asked.
"And... there's talk of making me into the Tenth... Divine..." Cara said as she looked away and Serana began to snicker.
"It's not funny!" she then protested as she wheeled toward her bride.
"The hell it's not. It's hilarious!"
"Uhh!!" Cara fumed with an exaggerated eye roll before looking to Jasmine and Elma and seeing them chuckling. She put her hands onto her hips in an annoyed manner and shook her head.
"So, what brings you two here?" Elma asked.
"We wanted to get away, so we came here. We practically had to escape the Imperial City to do so without anyone seeing us use the portal to get here.
"That's pretty funny. How do they act about you, Serana?" Elma asked.
"So far, so good. They haven't put together me with my old role as court wizard yet. I suppose that's not a record that is so much public knowledge as much as who the Empress was. The only ones who know I'm what I am are Lasseter and his staff, and they're sworn to secrecy... for now."
"And what about that thing?" Elma asked, now pointing at Serana's head.
"I'm... the High Queen of Cyrodiil."
"Ooh! Nice! You like it?" Jasmine questioned.
"It's not so bad. My mother thinks it's completely insane, but got a laugh at my expense over it," Serana replied while shrugging.
"So... what about Helena?" Jasmine asked afterward.
"She's advancing quickly. Dragonborn babies are born faster than normal ones. She'll give birth within a few months at this rate. I guess we'll know what happens by then," Cara replied.
"Any idea as to what may happen?" Elma questioned.
"None. The divines have yet to give any sign of anything. Helena seemed rather ill when we spoke last. I'm afraid that it won't go well for her. I hate it for her. I... love her, and she's such a sweet girl. I hate it for Piotr as well. I don't know what he'd do without her."
"That's terrible, to lose your family over the way your kid is born."
"Yeah. I did that to my parents way back when. I used to feel horrible for how my father reacted when he threw me away, but I think I may get it now. I killed my mother by being born, and maybe he just couldn't deal with it," Cara replied.
