Chapter 1

I woke up this morning feeling groggy. I didn't rest well last night since I heard my parents going at it from the other room last night. I respect their relationship and all, but good lord, they could wait a week in between each session.

I yawn. I then look to my comfy blanket, who I refer to as "Blankey" I snuggle with the blanket, wrapping myself up like a burrito and standing up. I walk out of my room.

"Good morning sweetheart." My mom says.

I sign to her "Hello" and walk downstairs, being greeted as I walk down. "Hello Dave!" At least my family was good at greeting one another. I hug my father who is currently in the kitchen. I always favored him over mom, except when he got mad. Then I favored mom.

"Would you like some eggs?" My father signs to me.

"Sure." I signed back. I grab myself some orange juice from inside the refrigerator door, pouring some in a cup, and putting away the rest. My dad then hands me the eggs I wanted.

"Thank you" I signed. I then walked over to the living room to watch some toons. That's funny, my favorite show, called "LRS Cartoons," came out with a new episode. I missed it last night since 9pm is my strict bedtime, and it premiered at 9:30pm. No matter, it's on this morning, so I don't exactly have to cry about missing it. The show has a lot of cuss words, and a lot of sexual references, but my parents don't really care, seeing as though I've already learned about sex and such. It's like Rick and Morty, which is kinda like this show, except the concepts aren't intergalactic.

About half way through the episode, my brother Jacob wakes up and makes his grand entrance into the room. He is only 2 years older than me, but he's allowed to drink coffee! I hear adults and teens get addicted to coffee, and I kind of wanna know what the big deal is. Kind of like in this show, where the main character says "Don't talk to me until I've had my coffee." What's the big deal? It's just a drink!

"Good morning Jacob." Mom smiles.

"Morning Mom," Jacob rubs his eyes. "By the way, uh...you guys might want to keep it down a bit at night."

Hah! That's funny, my brother being an adult here.

"Excuse me?" Mom looks confused.

"You know what I'm talking about, Mom. You're gonna scar the kids."

I know what he's talking about.

"You are also a child, young man."

"I may be a child, but someone around here needs to address the noise level in the house at night."

"What are you even doing up that late?"

"I woke up because of it, don't get mad at me for being woken up by your mad moaning. "It's so good." Ring a bell?"

Mom looks personally offended at that comment. Jacob just goes into the kitchen, with a smug smirk. I'm proud of my brother for saying something. I don't usually get proud of anybody, but that was a monumental moment right there.

As Jacob comes and sits down next to me, he rubs my head.

"Hey lil bro, how are you?" He asks.

I look around. Nobody is watching but him. I turn to him fast and sign "I heard mom and dad doing it last night too."

Jacob chuckles.

He then looks at the TV. "LRS Cartoons" was also a favorite show of Jacob's, mainly because of the swearing and the sexual references I think. He always sexualized the main character.

"Heh, look at her boobs."

That was my brother for ya.

He always did stuff like that around me, maybe to think I was going to mimic him or something, but I personally won't mimic that behavior. It seems immature, and I like being mature.

After about 10 more minutes into the episode, my sister Fiona came down. She rejected eating, which really concerned all of us.

"Why aren't you eating?" Jacob asks with concern. "You've got to eat to live."

"I'm not hungry. Also, why are you concerned? I know I look fat, so I've got to slim down a bit."

"You are a twig. Go eat something." My brother pushed her.

"Make me."

Jacob rolled his eyes, grabbing ahold of his phone and texting someone.

"Mom, Fiona's not eating again!" Jacob yells.

"Fiona, go eat something."

"But I'm fat, I need to fast."

"Would you rather eat, or go be tube-fed in the hospital?"

"UGH!"

She storms off to the kitchen.

My sister had anorexia, it was clear as day. However, she hadn't been put in a facility yet. Keyword being yet. I hope they do send her since she hasn't eaten for 2 days. Her body is so concerning to her, that her health is deteriorating faster than my parent's. When we last went to the hospital, her kidneys were beginning to fail.

I look at Jacob's phone. "Who are you texting?" I signed.

"My friends. Oh hey, did you want to read?" He signed.

"Yes! Please!"

"Mom, I'm getting the kindle out for Dave!" He yells.

"Alright!" Mom replies.

Jacob gets up, reaching the top shelf of the bookshelf and grabbing the kindle. Jacob was always my favorite sibling, as he understood me not wanting to talk. He also defended me from bullies, as he nearly fought 4 of them to keep me safe. He walked over to me, handing me the kindle.

"Thank you." I signed.

I tapped a few times on the kindle, bringing up the story "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. As I began reading, I couldn't help but to smile at my brother and hug him. I loved him very much. He hugged back, watching the show on TV.

After some reading, I handed the kindle back to my brother. "Done." I spoke quietly.

My brother gasps. He always does when I speak.

"I said I'm done."

Dad walks in. "Did Dave just speak?"

"Yeah!" Jacob looks proud.

"Good job kiddo. Keep talking!"

I get shy and gulp. I then sign "I don't want to."

"Awwww, ok." Dad frowns. I hated disappointing dad, but I really didn't like talking.

"Did Dave speak?" Mom asks as she walks in.

"Yeah, he said that he was done with the kindle."

"Lovely! I'm glad he's talking a little bit."

I knew talking was a mistake. I always get unwanted attention if I do speak.

The clock ticked, the room got quiet. The only voice that spoke was the voice on the TV. It was time to go out, like we did every Sunday during the summer.
