With Noah and Kris dressed, we exit the apartment building into the streets of Brooklyn. Trash flows over the curb of the sidewalk and graffiti covers walls. We walk past a man under his car, hood popped open as he works, and stop to talk to talk to Reek.
"Kris, what'd I tell you about letting your mans come out the crib looking like a whole square?" he fist bumps the younger brother. "You too, (y/n). You really let him do himself like that?"
"Only so much we can do," I shrug, crossing my arms across my chest. Noah unzips Kris's backpack to take out the VCR player he just fixed.
"Yeah, whatever, bro. Look. Here," he hands it to Reek.
"Ooh, my dawg!" Reek whistles, "When you gonna let me put your skills to work and get you some real money? You and (n/n) could make a great team."
"Yeah, says the dude who can't even afford cable," Noah retorts, causing me to laugh.
"Sorry man, I already got a gig," I smirk.
"'Says the guy who..." Reek mocks. "I choose not to purchase cable. It's my own personal way to protest the vampiric nature of modern-day capitalism!" Noah, Kris, and I keep walking down the street as Reek shouts after us. We step into the street lined with cars on each side, narrowly avoiding a car that comes racing forward. "Hey, good luck on that interview in that dusty suit!" Reek finally finishes as we reach the other side. We navigate the busy streets of New York, following the familiar route to the hospital.
While waiting at a red light, I look down to fix the dark grey flannel around my waist but am quickly distracted by the blue light emitting from under my shirt. I pull on the familiar silver chain and slide my hand downwards so the pendant rests in my hand. The eyes of the mechanical figure glow a technological blue color. That's never done that before, I furrow my brows at the thought and quickly drop the necklace down my shirt. As Noah and Kris begin to cross the street, I decide to look into the mysterious lighting later.
We walk a few more blocks through the bustling city before reaching the hospital. Entering the large building, we walk through the sterile-smelling lobby before sitting down, Kris between Noah and I. We wait in silence for a few minutes, Kris flipping through a comic book before Noah speaks up.
"Okay, what are the rules?" Noah asks his younger brother.
"Bros before hoes," Kris responds without hesitation. Barking out a laugh, I give the boy a fist bump. Noah instead looks at him with an expression that says 'are you serious?' Kris looks down with a sigh before revising his answer. "Don't be a problem. Don't go looking for a problem," he's cut off by Noah joining in. "Or else we're gonna have a problem," they finish together. "I know, I know," Kris is clearly annoyed with the reminder.
"Okay, I'll be back in a little bit," Noah stands up from the uncomfortable seat. "(y/n), keep an eye on him."
"Don't have to tell me twice," I give my best friend a mock salute. Noah smooths his suit out for a final time before walking toward the exit while Kris goes back to his comic book. I fiddle with my hands, twisting the rings that adorn my fingers. It's not before I space out, staring at the wall opposite from me, but I am quickly surprised when Noah returns much earlier than expected. And by earlier, I mean that only five minutes have passed since he left in the first place.
