"Blood makes you related. Loyalty makes you family."

Gaumbhi rattled the heavy wooden door aside, trudging in with two month's worth of groceries. "Dev, Shiva, Krish! Mein ghar agaya!" He called out, voice bouncing off the pillars.

The boys remained quiet, pin drop silence flooding through the house. Usually they would jump on Gaumbi the moment he set foot inside, ransacking through the bags for snacks. But not today.

A slight charring smell wafted through the place, up till the veranda. That can't be good. What are these little devils up to now? Rushing in, he stopped in his tracks once he heard hushed whispers coming from the kitchen.

Leaning against the wall, he peeped in to see what mischief his brothers had cooked up now. He heard his youngest, four year old Krish's voice first.

"Shh, Gaumbhi ghar agaye Dev!"

"Mujhe bhi sunayi diya lekin cake abhi ready nahi hain."

Cake? What cake?

"Main! Main! Main! Main button press karunga!" A baby growl punctuated the demand.

"Nahi Shiva, main sabse bada hoon, toh sirf main his allowed hoon, microwave chalene ke liye."

"Jhoote sirf Gaumbhi ko allowed hain."

"Hum Guambhi ko nahi batayenge."

Acha bachoo. Gautham thought to himself, amused.

Hearing the beeping of the oven, he decided it was time to intervene, jaw going slack at the scene in front of him.

Chocolate and butter splattered across the walls, shelf lopsided, clearly used for wall climbing despite his many warnings, a can of whipped cream rolled on the floor, drained empty.

In the middle of the kitchen floor Krish sat with his legs spread out, a mixing bowl balanced on his head like a hat, covered in flour, blinking slowly, white powder sprinkling down his eyelids.

Shiva and Dev were no better, chocolate smears all over their hands and cheeks, a gloopy mess on a plate between them, both tugging and fighting for it, freezing once they noticed Gaumbhi at the doorway.

Gaumbhi couldn't help himself, bursting out in laughter at their gobsmacked faces, chest rumbling with amusement at his three mischievous monkeys.

Grabbing a towel, he started wiping the flour off of Krish's cheeks. "Cake he chahiyeh tha toh mujhe bata dete, main lein aata. Why didn't you wait for me?"

Shiva grinned, jumping in place, hopping onto Gaumbhi's back, wrapping his tiny arms around his neck. Gaumbhi instinctively reached out to hold him, used to his hyperactiveness. "Buddhu Gaumbhi, aapka birthday cake aap se hi kaise mangathe?"

Gaumbhi halted. "Kya?"

Dev puffed up his chest triumphantly. "Pata tha aap bhul gaye honge!" He held the plate out, presenting him the burned mess. The three stood before him and broke out into a toothy grin.
