Elena couldn't shake the feeling of betrayal. As she and Marco were ushered into a private room to discuss their next steps, she couldn't help but glare at him. "This changes nothing between us," she hissed.
Marco's jaw tightened. "I wouldn't expect it to. But right now, we need to work together, whether we like it or not."
They were given a moment to themselves, the tension between them thick enough to cut with a knife. Elena paced the room, her mind racing. "Who would want to sabotage the truce?" she muttered, half to herself.
Marco leaned against the wall, watching her. "Someone with a lot to gain from keeping our families at war. Maybe an outside force trying to move in on our territories."
Elena stopped pacing, meeting his gaze. "Or someone within our own ranks, looking to seize power."
Marco frowned. "Are you suggesting a traitor?"
"It's possible," she said. "We need to investigate everyone. No one can be trusted."
He nodded slowly. "Agreed. But we need to be smart about this. If word gets out that we're working together, it could make things worse."
She sighed, knowing he was right. "Fine. We keep this alliance a secret. But don't think for a second that I trust you, Moretti."
"The feeling is mutual, Russo," he replied coldly. "Let's just get through this and then go back to hating each other in peace."
Their uneasy truce was put to the test over the next few days. They gathered information, interviewed their families' allies, and slowly began to piece together the puzzle. The more they uncovered, the more they realised how deep the conspiracy went.
One evening, as they met in a secluded warehouse to exchange information, Elena found herself looking at Marco with reluctant respect. Despite their differences, he was intelligent, resourceful, and—annoyingly—honest in his desire to end the conflict.
Marco caught her staring and raised an eyebrow. "What?"
She shook her head, looking away. "Nothing. Just... thinking."
"About?"
"How much I hate that we're actually working well together," she admitted, a small, bitter smile on her lips.
Marco chuckled softly. "Yeah, it's a real nightmare, isn't it?"
Before they could say anything more, the sound of footsteps echoed through the warehouse. They tensed, ready for another fight, but relaxed slightly when Angelo Moretti emerged from the shadows.
"Marco, Elena," he greeted them. "We've found something."
"What is it?" Marco asked, his posture straightening.
Angelo handed them a file. "A name. Someone who's been quietly amassing power and influence on both sides. Someone who benefits greatly from the continued conflict."
Elena opened the file, her eyes scanning the contents. Her blood ran cold as she read the name. "It's..."
"Someone we never suspected," Angelo finished. "Now, we need to decide how to handle this."
Elena looked at Marco, her heart pounding. The enemy was closer than they had ever imagined, and now they had to face the ultimate test of their uneasy alliance. Could they truly trust each other, or would their own hatred tear them apart before they could unmask the real threat?
Now they have to work togetherrr!! <3 Thanks so much for reading! It means a lot!
