"That's your quirk? In that case, I don't recommend you have children."
Those words were like a death sentence to Vivian; someone like her, whose greatest dream was to become a mother, was told something like that because of a quirk that was meant to be a blessing to others.
That was three years ago.
"Vivian, do you mind seeing the patient in bed 7? They've refused to see anyone else," the nurse on the ward asked, and Vivian nodded before quickly taking the patient's files and heading to room 7.
"You can't keep acting up like this; I will actually use the scary injection on you if you're not careful," she said in a fake stern voice, seeing the child with tears in his eyes. "Come on, Toya, just take your medicine. It'll help you sleep better."
"No! I don't want to! I hate it!" he insisted. Vivian sighed. He was shaking and covered in cold sweat, struggling to sleep again.
She sat down on the bed and hugged him; he wrapped his arms around her, crying wildly. She patted his head, her hands glowing as she activated her quirk.
"Shhh, it's okay, Toya," she soothed him, her hands running through his white hair as she used her quirk to calm him down. His sobs slowed down and eventually came to a halt. He yawned, and his grasp on her lab coat loosened. She sat there silently until she heard his snores, and eventually, she placed him down to sleep and slipped out of the room.
"Thank you so much, Vivi, we really don't know what we'd do without you," the nurse said, grateful the child was finally asleep. She handed Vivian a carton of juice to drink so she wouldn't get dizzy spells.
"Thanks, Nel. Is it okay if I take my break now? I'll be back in 30 minutes."
"Of course, we'll bleep you if we need anything."
Vivi took off, she often had her dinner alone on night shifts, and today was no different. She sat in the cafeteria, opening her lunch box and digging in.
The hospital was filled with bustling sounds; patients, staff, and family members talked casually. She stared into space as she ate, her mind empty.
"Dr. Lee?"
She snapped out of her trance to see a large man standing by her.
Enji Todoroki.
"Good evening, sir. Are you here for Toya? He just fell asleep, sorry about that..."
He smiled and sat across from her, his spikey red hair blending into the mass of hair colors. Not a lot of people knew his hero persona, but Vivian did. It wasn't hard to figure it out; Toya was exactly like him.
"Thank you for taking care of him; he has been through a lot recently," Enji said with a sigh.
"Is everything alright at home?" That was a weird question to ask; she realized that too late. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean that; you don't have to answer that." She subconsciously peered into his mind again, she scolded herself internally—how unprofessional.
"No, it's alright... Have you ever looked at your life and wondered why you did what you did? Why were your goals so compelling, why did you have to obsess about something so much?"
Vivi could feel it, his thoughts were chaotic and disarranged. His heart was like a tangled web of wool.
"Did I do the right thing with Toya? I mean... look at him now."
This wasn't the first time Toya had been admitted to this unit, but his admissions were becoming more and more frequent.
"I desperately wanted a child to stand up to a quirk that remains unbeatable. It is my selfish desire... I do not want to see Toya this unwell because of that desire. He's my first son..."
