Yuno swept through his opponent effortlessly, as if it was a task as mundane as tying his shoes. Y/n had known he was impressive, but this was something else entirely. Her gaze thinned, while she knew there had been rare cases of immense power outside of nobility.

Like Asta, though what made him special was his normalcy. If it wasn't through hard work and abnormal lack of magic he'd never be able to weild the demon dweller sword. Which by some random chance gained the power of anti magic.

But Yuno was something else entirely. He possessed a power which should've been impossible for someone of his upbringing. And Y/n knew she couldn't chalk it up to luck, because deep down, somewhere within her gut. She knew it was anything but.

As the exam drew to a close, it was nearly time for the captains to choose their new recruits.

Y/n's gaze tore from Yuno to scan the other examinees, her gaze critical. Some dressed in the finest silks stood tall, confident they'd pass and bring not only money but honor to their names. Others looked ready to vomit, accepting their fate as commoners.

But Y/n's sights were set on one life long goal; To claim what she believed was her rightful place among the Silva family, to prove her worth to everyone who had ever doubted her. And call it pathetic or delusional, but she truly believed she could do it.

Y/n held her chin high, eyes shutting as she breathed in a peaceful inhale as the evening sun rays kissed her cheeks. Like a warm blessing easily welcoming her dreams, spurring her forward like a gentle push. It was a nice thought, a pleasant one she needed to believe after years of trial and error.

Years of bowing her head in apology to people who'd only abuse her further, years of ironclad shackles weighing her down from the person she was meant to be. Years of doubting if she had shared blood with a man like Licht, who she probably disappointed more times she than she could count.

Y/n needed this one victory to lift her overwhelming amount of failures.

Her eyes peeked open, hands cupping the invisible pour of sunshine. "Don't be naive,"  Zell's tone cold and cautionary, contrasted with the warmth she held within her palms. Y/n dismissed Zell's warning, letting her hands fall limply to her sides.

And with them, the warm she desperately needed.

"That concludes the exam," announced William, his voice calm and composed. Y/n's eyes snapped up to meet his.

Though she hadn't realized it, William's gaze had been following her all along. He was watching her, not with the scrutiny of a commander evaluating a recruit, but with the quiet affection of an older brother.

To William, Y/n was more than just a promising candidate—she was family.

One of the few who had seen him without the mask, who knew the face behind the veneer of authority and still looked at him with the same respect and warmth. Her acceptance had never wavered, even when she first saw the scars that marred his features.
