GLASS SHATTERING AND NOSES BLEEDING. That was the kind of environment KIRRA WALKERS was brought up in, a house that never settled for anything less than domestic violence. Her mother's pleas for help could be heard but they were never answered. "Daniel! Daniel, please! Not in front of Kirra!" her mother's voice is muffled as she begs her drunk boyfriend to put an end to his heinous acts who cackles in response, throwing and smashing his beer down in response. "The fuck would I care for? It's not like the kid is mine." 

KIRRA WAS SEVEN WHEN SHE HAD TO MOVE TO NEW ZEALAND. The land of milk and honey, she'd assumed from what her mum and aunties described it as. Her biological father would be waiting for her on the other side of the vast pacific ocean, hopefully with a smile on his face instead of a belt in his hand. "You'll be alright, Keer. Daddy is a good man." her mother said, soothing down the bumps in her hair. The child stayed quiet, grip tightening around her suitcases as the time for her to board the flight got nearer. She just wanted to go home.  

AFTER TURNING 21, SHE MADE IT HER GOAL TO REUNITE WITH HER MUM. It had been several years since she had last seen her in person, heart aching from the memory alone. "You sure you'll be alright, bub?" Her dad asks, hand rubbing his daughter's back as a way to show comfort. Kirra leaned into her dad as she wrapped her arms around his waist, tightening her grip around him like she did to her suitcases all those years ago. "I don't really want to go but you know I have to." she whispered in response. Her dad took a deep breath, patting his daughter's shoulder. "Well, your cousin KIERAN will be there with you so you better behave." 

THE GIRL LAUGHED AS SHE SWIPED A TEAR FROM HER EYE. Leaving was the last thing she wanted to do when it came to living with her dad, he'd made up for all those shitty years she spent with her mum. Not that she didn't love her because at least she tried. With one last squeeze, she let go and waved. "I'll call you when I land." she choked out, walking backwards toward her gate. "I can't wait, darling. I love you!" her dad yelled as he waved back, eyes turning red from the threat of tears about to spill. "I love you too!"
