Last night was ...
It's probably best if I forget last night. Alexander and I got way too close and safe to say, it's now messing with my head.
I also failed miserably at getting any sleep. My mind went from focusing on a marriage I do not want to trying to convince myself that maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea after seeing Alexander's body.
It's now the morning of the signing and of course, there is a glam team here. I have four people surrounding me, and it's a bit overwhelming. Someone for my hair, my makeup, my hands, and my feet. Let's not forget the revolving doors that seem to only bring different versions of a white dress, gold shoes, and jewelry to match.
Though the noise is helping with my anxiety, I can't help feeling like I am drowning. This isn't the big day, where everyone will be here to celebrate Alexander and I's fake love, but the lack of a crowd means that all of the attention will be on us, and that is worse.
"You look beautiful," Renée says, as she moves away from blocking my view and I get a glimpse of the final look in the mirror.
Wow.
I do look beautiful. My makeup is a soft glam, with slight glossy lips that pop. My hair is in an updo, with curls falling out of the secure bun, and stray pieces sprayed in place to frame my face. My skin is an even tone, courtesy of the fake tan they rubbed on the visible parts of my body, and my nails, fingers, and toes, are a soft shade of pink, that from a distance, could be mistaken for their natural color.
I look elegant and for a lack of a better word, timeless. I look like someone's wife.
I am going to be someone's wife.
"I need a moment alone please," I speak up, suddenly failing to catch my breath as I continue to accept my fate.
Everyone scurry out of the room, and head for the door, honoring my request to be alone. I sigh, and let my body fall on the bed, careful not to mess up my hair, though I am sure that it would be fixed before I even noticed it.
A quiet knock on the door gets my attention and I let out another sigh, ready for my privacy to be invaded again and to continue getting ready for the biggest day of my life. I open the door, expecting to see my magic workers but I am dead wrong. "Alexander."
"Can I come in?" He asks, in a voice so low that it goes straight to my empty belly. I couldn't bring myself to eat anything all morning. I am sure it would all come right back up anyway.
I nod my head and open the door wider to allow his frame to pass through. A black velvet box, with a silky pink bow wrapped around it, is in his hands, and he gives it to me. "For you. A little wedding day present."
I twiddle the delicate box in my hands, knowing the heavy meaning surrounding my accepting it. "That really won't be necessary," I say before handing it back to Alexander.
He shoves both of his hands into his pants pockets and gives me a small smile. "I recognize the favor you're doing me by going through with this."
Not really a favor, I'm getting paid.
"And beginning to learn you," he continues, "I am guessing that you're thinking that since you're getting paid, it's not much of a favor, but it is. You're tying yourself to me and it will impact the rest of your life. That is no small thing."
I chuckle a bit, surprised that he correctly guessed the thought that was running through my head. "Thank you," I say, as I unwrap the bow and open the box.
A beautiful necklace greets me when I open the box and my eyes widen as I marvel at its beauty. The tennis chain supports a pear-shaped diamond that gleams in the sunlight entering the room. It's a light shade of pink and I look down at my ring. It's the same color, the same cut. I avoid praising Alexander, his ego doesn't need the boost. "Wow, it's beautiful. Thank you."
Alexander removes the necklace from its delicate box and walks until he stands behind me. "You wouldn't believe the inspiration behind it."
I lift my head and look at us in the mirror. My frame is tall, and strong all on its own, but with Alexander towering over me, I appear miniature, almost more fragile than glass. He engulfs my entire body with barely half of his and my stomach does cartwheels, knowing that this was once my fantasy, and now that it's become a reality, I can't even bring myself to enjoy it.
Alexander brings the necklace around my neck, and when his fingers slightly graze my collarbone, it sends jolts of electricity running through my body. He clasps it and my reflection reveals a vision that I now wonder if it is the same as Alexander had in his head when he picked this necklace out.
It's a vision of perfection. I look perfect.
Excitement takes over and I turn around to face Alexander once again. "It fits like it was made for me."
I look up at him, only to find his eyes already waiting for mine, and he says in a low voice that shakes me at my core, "It was."
My chest caves, deeper breaths fighting to escape as the room seems to run out of oxygen the longer we hold eye contact.
It's happening again.
The room is closing in, along with the distance between our faces.
Three inches.
Two inches.
One inch.
"I should finish getting ready," I interrupt before anything further happens. Alexander gulps and pulls back.
"I will leave you to it then," he says and walks out.
Fuck, I think I upset him, moments before we sign our marriage license.
What if he pulls the plug on this whole thing? What of my mother? Of my father?
What about me? A little voice echoes in my mind but I quickly silence it.
I am not part of this equation, and I never will be.
