The night air was thick with humidity, causing Maggie's hair to frizz as she made her way up the garden path to Sofia's front door. She balanced a sleeping bag under one arm and clutched a backpack stuffed with snacks in the other hand. Tonight was her first sleepover at Sofia's new house and she was running late, having lost track of time chatting with her mom over dinner.
Maggie could hear shrieks of laughter coming from the house as she rang the doorbell. Moments later Sofia flung open the door, grinning broadly.
"Maggie! You made it!" she cried, ushering Maggie inside. "We were just telling ghost stories to pass the time while we waited for you. Come on in, join us!"
Maggie followed Sofia through to the living room where she found their other friend, Clara, tucked into a mound of pillows on the floor next to an array of junk food.
"Hi Maggie!" Clara waved a chocolate bar in greeting. "Sofia was just telling me about the Kumakatok. Have you heard that story before?"
"The what?" Maggie raised her eyebrows as she settled onto the pile of pillows and helped herself to a bag of chips.
"The Kumakatok," Sofia repeated in a mysterious tone. "It's an old Filipino legend about a spirit that knocks on doors at night to signal an impending death."
Maggie shuddered. "Well that's not very cheery! Tell me more." She nibbled on a chip, intrigued. Clara nodded enthusiastically for Sofia to continue.
"Legend has it..." began Sofia, pausing for dramatic effect. "That late at night, you'll hear a knocking sound at your door. If you're foolish enough to answer, you'll find nobody there. But you will have let the Kumakatok in. And soon after, someone in the house will die!"
Sofia wiggled her fingers and made ghostly sound effects while Clara and Maggie giggled nervously.
"It's just a story," Maggie shrugged, reaching for another handful of chips. "I bet someone made it up years ago to stop kids from answering the door at night."
"Maybe," mused Sofia. "But it could be real! My aunt swears she heard knocking late one night last year. The next week her husband suddenly died of a heart attack. My aunt thinks she accidentally let the Kumakatok in!"
