As Thomas Jefferson, the most popular boy in school, walked up to my table, I felt my heart sink to my stomach. Following him was his friend, James, who also happens to be my ex friend. That's besides the point, though. Thomas had this smug look on his stupid face, and I knew he was going to do or say something idiotic.
He stood in front of our table, glancing down at us, slyly. John scoffed. "Fuck off, Jefferson." He hissed.
I looked at Thomas' hand and he was holding..
My diary?
Shit! Where the fuck did he get that?! My heart sunk down to my KNEES. My gaze was on my diary which he had in his possession. I glanced up at him and I was going to say something, but words couldn't come out.
Thomas snickered at John. "Just a second, Johnny. I reckon I have something your little playmate might be lookin' for." He held up my diary for everyone at my table and everyone around us to see. I could feel eyes on us. I inhaled sharply. John's eyes darted toward my diary and he knew exactly what he was looking at. Lafayette, who was sitting next to me, was looking down, though. As for me, I think I was hyperventilating.
I stood up. "Gimme that." I demanded. Thomas giggled, then his giggle became a hearty laugh. "Hmm? This lil thing?" he teased once he regained his composure. My eyebrows narrowed. "Yeah. Give it to me." I reiterated. Thomas smiled and he glanced at his friend, then back at me.
"You left your diary in the library, Hamilton." Thomas said, dangling the book in front of me as I walked up to him. "I, uh, I read the pages." He continued, opening the book. My eyes shot open and I froze for a moment before yelling, "Close that!" and attempting to snatch it from him. He just elbowed me away and glanced down at my diary once again. "Says here you like me.. Do you like me? Alexander?" He questioned, a shit-eating grin on his annoying fucking face. His tone was just loud enough for everyone around to hear. All eyes on us. Crap.
I immediately stopped reaching for the diary and fell silent. A hush fell over our side of the lunch room. John stood up. "Bullshit! He doesn't like you, Jefferson! You're full of shit! Give him back his journal!" John reprimanded, angrily. Meanwhile, Lafayette just kept staring at seemingly nothing on the table..
I swallowed. God, I'm in deep shit. Thomas rolled his eyes at John and he announced, "Proof's in the paper, sweetheart. Take a look-see!" He turned the diary around and, to the surprise of many, it read:
"Entry 082: I think I like Thomas Jefferson."
In Big. Red. Letters.
The rest of what I wrote was too small to see, but they'd seen enough anyway. I'm fucked. John gasped. A few people gathered around.
I jumped up and grabbed the diary from Thomas. "D-Don't touch my shit." I shakily demanded. I made an attempt to make him feel threatened, but my stuttering didn't help. I was bright red, hyperventilating, and all this.
Thomas made a hum of satisfaction. "Is it true you like me? Huh?" He questioned again. I bit my lip. "I.. suppose?" I muttered, holding my book tight. Thomas' eyes narrowed. "Funny." He stated. I glanced up at him, my eyebrows furrowing.
"What's so funny?" I queried. Thomas giggled briefly. "Funny that you're so pathetic you even think you could have a chance with me. I read your whole entry. It was- pathetic." Thomas responded. Ouch. My lip quivered. Not.. Not because he hurt my feelings! Definitely not! It was because I was so embarrassed.
But, my heart hurt so bad after hearing that. It felt like it was squeezed, ripped to shreds, and then flushed down a drain.
I knew he was an asshole, but this is otherworldly. And in front of the whole lunch room, too. My fingers clenched and my body tensed up.
"Gonna cry?" Thomas teased. I bit my quivering lip and glanced around the room, my eyes watering. So many eyes on me. I was so overwhelmed. I glanced back up at Thomas, misty eyed. "Go on then, f*g. Go cry to your daddy." He added.
Lafayette stood up and he rushed over to Thomas. "My friend, this is too much. I cannot sit there and let you torment Alexander. I cherish you but I can not cherish this wretched behavior." Lafayette scolded. He then started speaking rapid French at Thomas that I couldn't make out because of my blurry mind... but his tone was somewhat enraged. I blinked and tears streamed down my face. My jaw was sore from holding in my sobs. I let out a sob right there in the cafeteria. Fuck.
Thomas took a step back. "D'accord, d'accord. Désolé." Thomas said to Lafayette. He sounded defeated. He turned to James before saying, "Lets go." and he walked off with him.
When Thomas left, I let out a heavy sob and ran off. I could hear an, "Alexander!" from who I could only assume was Laf, but I just kept running. I had to be anywhere else. Anywhere else...
