Part 1: Chapter 1
"What happened in the past that was painful has a great deal to do with what we are today."- William Glasser

November 2012
You side stepped around the corner, holding your gun out in front of you. Your head was on a swivel, looking left and right. As you stepped down the next three stairs into a small opening, you found that nothing was there but concrete walls and flooring. No unsub. Where had the bastard gone? He had been in here mere minutes ago. You were sure of it.
Agent Jennifer Jareau and Agent Luke Alvez followed down the stairs a couple paces behind you, scanning around the corner themselves. The rest of the team stood outside the warehouse on standby, waiting for any one of you to call in backup at any time.
They had sent you, Alvez and JJ down into the warehouse because the three of you had been tracking suspects and were already in the area when the call from Agent Penelope Garcia had come through with the actual unsub's identity and location.
"Let's split up," Alvez called ahead, his voice echoing through the stairwell. Your body tensed as those familiar words pushed a wave of memories through you.
"No, no, we need to stick together." You replied.
You couldn't make this mistake again, especially not during your 4th week with the BAU. You pushed the memories back down, reframing your focus to the present. You had fought tooth and nail the last 2 months to keep the flashbacks and nightmares from creeping back in. You were not going to let it start happening again, and you were definitely not letting any of that into this current moment.
"Y/N's right," JJ said. A breath of relief escaped your mouth. It was now two against one, and you figured Alvez wouldn't press any further. He usually didn't once he realized he was going to be outnumbered.
JJ stepped closer to you, her head still on a swivel. This unsub must be hiding somewhere in the basement of the warehouse you were searching.
Alvez scoffed and huffed a quiet "Fine" before following you and JJ deeper into the dark stairwell. You didn't have to turn around to know that he was shaking his head. You didn't care. You knew that sticking together was going to keep that from happening again.
You also felt a twinge of guilt course through your body, and you couldn't tell if it was the guilt from the past bubbling up inside of you, or the guilt of being selfish and keeping the three of you together on your current search. Even if you agreed with Alvez that splitting up to search might benefit this situation, it didn't matter.
You pushed everything down once again and pressed forward deeper into the warehouse basement. A twinge of satisfaction for being able to keep the three of you together rose in your chest.
You enjoyed working with the members of the BAU; the team was tight-knit and worked together in all moments of thinking and action. Everyone was kind, helpful and had been extremely warm and open to you joining the team.
Alvez and Agent Tara Lewis had immediately both felt like older siblings, taking you under their wings and showing you the ropes of the BAU. Their endless banter, jokes and sibling-like support engulfed you the second you arrived.
Agent Emily Prentiss and Agent David Rossi, the two current leaders of the BAU, had continually expressed how impressed they had been at your willingness and eagerness to jump straight into cases and continued to praise you for your hard work. They both knew your transfer had been under extenuating circumstances, but they had empathy and support for you muddling into a new start on their team.
