Sarah's POV
I ran through the house in desperate search for my bag. He took it. I just know it. I rummaged through all of the closets and all of the rooms but I couldn't find it anywhere. He must have caught on to my plan and got rid of my suitcase that contained everything that would help me get away. He wouldn't just throw it away. I know him too well to think that he would do something like that so I ran to the garage and sure enough I found it wedged in between the Christmas decorations and the Christmas tree.
I ran back into the house and grabbed any excess things that I might need during the trip. As I was heading towards the door to make my escape, the front door opened and there he was, just standing there waiting to kill me. I just froze. I couldn't move. It felt like I was in a situation where if I made the slightest move, he would lunge forward and kill me with his bare hands. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. I ran for the back door but he was quicker than me. In a split second, he had me pressed against the wall with his hands tightly wrapped around my neck. Slowly, I could feel my world getting darker and dark-
"Mommy wake up! Wake up, wake up,wake up!", I woke up in a cold sweat while my bed was being jumped on by my screaming three year old daughter, Mia. It took me a second to realize that what I just went through was a nightmare. It's been three years and I still think that I'm reliving the worst part of my life.
"Okay i'm up, i'm up!", I playfully screamed back. I grabbed Mia and started tickling her. Her laugh echoed in my head and it made me forget about my dream. When I finished tickling her, she quickly shot up and stared at me before saying, "Can I have ice cream for breakfast?".
"No. Little boys and girls should never eat ice cream for breakfast. They should have sugary cereal like normal people would!", I said.
"What's the difference?", she asked, looking confused.
"You've got a point kid. Okay. Ice cream for breakfast it is!", I say while jumping out of bed. "Are you coming?", I ask her. She violently nods her head before jumping off my bed and running to the kitchen with me right behind her.
"Okay, we have strawberry, mint, chocolate, vanilla, or tutti-fruitti swirl. What do you want?" , I asked with my head stuffed in the freezer, trying to pull out my coffee bean ice cream.
"Tutti-fruitti swirl!", she screamed. I turned my head at her and raised my eyebrows.
"oh, um. Please." , she said with big eyes. Trying to teach a toddler manners is literally one of the hardest things to teach. I nodded my head and pulled out the flavor she wanted. I opened the cupboard and asked her which bowl she wanted. She chose the Elsa bowl to my surprise. Usually she chose the Anna bowl.
"Sweetie, why did you choose the Elsa bowl today?", I asked her while scooping the ice cream into her bowl.
"She's a powerful woman and today I want to feel like a powerful woman.", she said with pure confidence in her voice. Today was her first day of preschool and I had been dreading it. Today was the first time that I would have to leave her with strangers for a full 8 hours. That freaked me out. Mia, on the other hand, couldn't wait. She was excited to meet new friends and learn about shapes and colors.
"I like that attitude of yours. Just remember, you're not actually a queen so don't go around yelling, 'OFF WITH HIS HEAD!' Okay?", I remind her. When she first saw Alice in Wonderland, that's all she would say for two weeks straight.
"I know. I won't. Pinky promise.", she said while sticking out her pinky. I grabbed her pinky with mine, and we both kissed our hands to seal the deal.
"Good. Are you done so we can get you ready for school?", I ask. She nods her head and runs to her room, without waiting for me to go with her. As I enter her room, I can see that she already laid out her outfit for the day. She chose a pink dress, white sandals, a yellow bow and her silver locket that she wears everyday. It had a picture of me in it. I helped her put her shoes on and clipped the bow in her hair.
"Mommy, could you curl my hair please?", she asked me with big eyes and a pouty lip.
"Why do you want me to curl your hair?", I asked her. I was fine with doing it but I wanted to hear what she would say.
"Every powerful woman has curly hair. Duh.", she said as if I was slow.
Duh.
"Alright, alright. Keep your pants on.", I said, raising my hands in defense. She high fived my hands and ran to the bathroom to brush her hair. I put her pajamas in her dirty clothes hamper and headed for the bathroom.
When I finished curling her hair, I packed her a lunch and walked her to the car. She was able to buckle herself in and she sat in her seat impatiently waiting for me to get in myself.
"Mom hurry up, you take forever!", she yelled.
"Mia calm down!", I yell back. I knew she was excited but I didn't think she would be this excited.
We arrived at her preschool and she almost hopped out while the car was still moving, but I locked the doors to stop her.
"Mia, what did I tell you about jumping out of the moving car?", I yelled at her. This wasn't the first time she's done this and it was a constant struggle to keep her from doing it.
"To stay in the car until you tell me I can get out.",
"Okay, so why didn't you wait for my okay?",
"Because you're taking forever!", she shouted before jumping out of the car. I'm starting to think that this whole preschool thing wasn't such a bad idea after all.
I got out of the car and went through the front doors. As I walk in, I see Mia outside already playing with a little boy. Mia making friends was something I never worried about, especially with her big personality. My only worry was that she would shove them in the dirt if they made her mad. But i'm pretty confident that my parenting skills have worked enough for her to behave. I hope.
Before I sign her in, I look down at my watch and saw that I was going to be late for work if I didn't leave now. I quickly scribbled down my name and started speed walking to my car. While I was walking out the door, I accidentally brushed against someone. I quickly mustered an apology before heading back to my car to go home and get ready for work.
