it was only 7:22 pm when bokuto and akaashi arrived. "you guys are early," i said, smiling as i let them in.

"uh-huh, coach, let us go early since his wife called him for dinner," bokuto explained, slipping on indoor shoes and wandering around.

"sorry for the intrusion," akaashi added, and i waved it off, telling him to make themselves at home.

suddenly, a scream from the kitchen startling us, "mama! what did i say about yelling!"

"oh shush deary my favorite grandson is here!" she said shrugging me off and waddling towards where bokuto was.

"here's my favorite mama!" cheered bokuto towards the old lady spreading his arms to hug the elderly with care.

rolling my eyes, i told akaashi to follow me to the kitchen so he could help me with the rest of the plates. he seemed awkward being beside the overly cheerful pair so i decided to save him, we emerge through the dinning room and see my grandmother listening to bokuto's endless chatter.

"ahh, how can i forget? this is akaashi!" bokuto introduced, and i tapped akaashi's shoulder to get his attention to them.

"this is the akaashi you were talking about?" my grandmother asked, eyeing him closely.

"uh-huh!" bokuto confirmed.

"my dear, you haven't told me that you knew another handsome man" she said, making me bite my lip in embarrassment. thankfully, toward her bold words.

though i do agree with her, as before me and bokuto got into a relationship we both had an attraction towards the male that he never knew about even until now. when i and bokuto both found out about our attraction towards the obvious male we both got into a mutual agreement to be boyfriend and girlfriend and watch and protect our crush from potential danger (*cough* fangirls/boys*cough*)

to say, dinner was quite the affair, with my grandmother asking all sorts of questions that i had to change the subject six times. i loved her, but it was a bit much.

after dinner, i started washing dishes, but akaashi stopped me. "you know i got this handled with," he said.

"i know, that's why i insist because you made us dinner," i replied, smiling. when i tried to take my hands back, bokuto pulled me to the living room.

i pout and protest that I should clean the dishes as they were guests.

"that's not fair."

"all is fair in love and war, [y/n]," bokuto teased, almost saying something more that made me smile secretly.

in the living room, my grandmother offered akaashi a plate of biscuits and cookies. he took a bite, surprised by its sweetness. "wow, what's this made of? it's so tasty he asked.

"it's just oatmeals," i answered, taking another cookie. "but i don't know what witchery my mama does as it doesn't taste like oatmeals."

"hush" she said slapping my hands to stop me from getting more. "stop it, it was made for the guest not you. and thank you deary"

"please keiji is alright" akaashi said smiling at his female friend's pout and decided to secretly give her his remaining cookie.

i gave him a playful smile, not noticing my grandmother watching us with a mischievous smile. 'ahh, young love,' she thought. 'wonder if....'

as the pitter patter of rain echoed from the window, the four of us—three teenagers and my grandmother—looked out at the pouring rain. "why don't you gentlemen stay for the night?" granny suggested.

"sure, granny, but i don't think akaashi—" bokuto started, but akaashi cut him off.

"no, no, i'm fine with it... if granny and [y/n] mind?" he asked awkwardly, clearly uneasy about staying at his best friend's girlfriend's house.

"of course i wouldn't mind! that's why i offered," granny replied. knowing what she had in mind, i went to the storage room to fetch an inflatable bed for the living room.

"[y/n] dear, why don't you sleep here in the livingroom to accompany them?" mama asked as i pulled out the bed.

"sure, i'll just get some extra pillows," i said, glancing briefly at akaashi before heading to the linen closet.

"make sure to replace the covers with clean ones." she said sitting at her rocking chair and reading her book.

"hai," i responded.

akaashi, looking uncomfortable while bokuto inflated the bed with an air pump, asked, "excuse me, is there anything i can do?"

"help [y/n], dear. i'll chat with bokuto while you two get things ready," mama said warmly.

akaashi nodded and came to find me. "[y/n]-san..." he began, but i cut him off.

"kei-kun, could you please get mama's medicine from her room? it's down the hall to the left, and the medicine box is near the door." i smiled at him over my shoulder as i carried the duffel bag.

akaashi found the room and grabbed the medicine box, but paused at a family portrait on the side table. it showed a happy family of four: a couple in their thirties and two children. the man had japanese features with unique orchid eyes, and the woman was clearly asian with sun-kissed skin. the children had a mix of their parents' features, though the girl looked distinct.

"that's my uncle's family and me," i said, startling him.

"sorry, i didn't mean to pry," akaashi stammered.

"it's alright. at first, i thought they were my parents too, until granny told me the truth," i explained. "my parents divorced when i was two, and neither wanted me. granny and grandpa took me in and raised me."

akaashi seemed unsure how to respond. seeing his dilemma, i punched him lightly on the shoulder. "don't feel sorry for me. i've had wonderful people raising me. who needs parents when you have grandparents like mine?" i said, picking up the blankets.

"let's go, don't wanna keep them waiting," i urged, and as we left the room, akaashi glanced back at the picture, clearly filled with unanswered questions.
