Having impressed the elven grand master of the guild elandor , with their display of skills, Nyx, Aric, and Magnus were granted higher-ranking quests than typical newcomers. The guild hall buzzed with murmurs and curious glances as the trio returned to the quest board, their status already elevated among the adventurers.
Elandor handed them a sealed scroll. "This quest should suit your abilities," he said, his eyes twinkling with interest. "There have been reports of unusual magical disturbances near the ancient ruins of durnhelm , deep within the forest. Investigate and resolve the issue. Be wary; it's dangerous territory."
Nyx accepted the scroll with a nod, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. "We'll take care of it," she promised.
As they left the guild hall, Aric tightened the straps on his armor. "Ruins of durnhelm, huh? I've heard stories about that place. Supposedly, it's haunted."
Magnus grinned, his eyes lighting up at the mention of ancient ruins. "Haunted or not, it's bound to have secrets worth uncovering. Besides, it's a chance to test our skills further."
Nyx led the way, her thoughts racing. The forest path to durnhelm was winding and treacherous, but they navigated it with practiced ease. As they ventured deeper, the air grew thick with an otherworldly energy. The trees seemed to whisper, and shadows danced at the edges of their vision.
Suddenly, a piercing cry echoed through the forest, followed by a rush of footsteps. A figure burst through the underbrush, collapsing at Nyx’s feet. It was a young woman, her clothes tattered and eyes wide with terror.
"Help me," she gasped, clutching at Nyx’s cloak. "They're coming!"
Aric and Magnus quickly formed a defensive stance around Nyx and the woman. "Who’s coming?" Aric demanded, scanning the surroundings.
Before she could answer, a pack of grotesque, shadowy creatures emerged from the darkness, their eyes glowing with malevolence. They moved with unnatural speed, snarling and hissing as they closed in.
Magnus stepped forward, his staff glowing with arcane power. "Stay back," he commanded, unleashing a torrent of magical fire that scorched the ground in front of the creatures, halting their advance.
Nyx helped the woman to her feet, her gaze steady. "We need to get to the ruins. Can you lead us there?"
The woman nodded, her fear palpable but determination shining through. "This way," she said, her voice trembling but resolute.
They fought their way through the forest, the shadowy creatures relentless in their pursuit. Aric’s sword flashed in the dim light, cutting down any that dared come too close, while Magnus cast spell after spell, creating barriers and launching attacks to keep them at bay.
Finally, they reached the ruins of durnhelm, the ancient stones towering ominously against the twilight sky. The creatures hesitated at the edge of the clearing, hissing in frustration before retreating into the shadows.
The woman collapsed to her knees, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you," she whispered. "You saved my life."
Nyx knelt beside her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We're here to help. What’s happening in these ruins?"
The woman took a deep breath, steadying herself. "My name is mira. "I was part of an expedition sent by the guild to investigate the disturbances. But something evil has awakened here. It’s controlling the creatures, and it won’t stop until everything is consumed."
Magnus’s eyes narrowed. "An ancient evil? This could be more dangerous than we thought."
Aric sheathed his sword, his expression grim. "We’ve come this far. We can’t turn back now."
