In-universe rule:
every individual learns about their designation (alpha/beta/omega) at birth. However, at the age of 18-21, they will experience "presentation" which is when they first experience heat/rut.

Sion supposed he was lucky. He was always told that everything was harder in the older days, and that if science had not progressed to the point that it was, he would not have debuted with his current team members. He would not have debuted with Yushi.

Debuting as an idol was already hard as it was. The rigorous training. The evaluations and selections. The soul-crushing heartbreak of falling out of a debut group lineup. And the worst of all... the enduring.

He couldn't have imagined if, on top of those, he had to consider biological factors that were once more detrimental in deciding who got to do what, and with whom.

Thanks to medical marvels that were suppressants, more people could mingle more easily with each other. Sion, being born an alpha, had been on suppressants since he first got his rut when he was eighteen. So, the feeling of being numbed was all that he knew. He knew that this was the case for most of his colleagues.

In his team, at least, he knew that Daeyoung went through the same thing he did. The main vocalist presented just before he joined Lastart and had been on suppressant ever since. In another case, as a beta, Riku didn't have to deal with the whole ordeal. He told Sion that being a beta was simple if not a little bit lonely at times. And the babies of the group... well, there was still time until Sion had to worry about Ryo and Sakuya presenting. After all, they were still so young.

And then, there was Yushi.

He had known Yushi for a long time, but he only learned that the younger one was an omega a little bit later in their acquaintanceship, or friendship if he was being generous.

Sion remembered the first time he noticed that Yushi smelled just a bit different than most of the other trainees. It was when he, Yushi, Wonbin, and some others were invited to watch SMTOWN concert as hidden trainees. Though clad in caps and masks, it was a rare occasion in which they dressed nicely in each others' presence, forgoing the sweat-drenched t-shirts which was a staple in the dance studio.

Underneath a fresh smell of laundry, Sion noticed a delicate scent from the younger boy. It was a pleasant dewy scent, crisp like rain, and accompanied by the faintest hint of peach somewhere.

"Yushi, you-"

The younger boy looked at him, tilting his head slightly, "Yes, hyung?"

Looking at Yushi's eyes, Sion lost his word for some unknown reason, he only talked when Wonbin who was next to him nudged him in the rib. He decided to be honest, "Ah, no. I guess I only just noticed your natural scent." But looking at Yushi's remaining blank expression, he was afraid he had misspoken, so he added quickly, "I'm sorry if that crossed the line, I didn't mean to offend you."

Yushi blinked, "I'm not offended." He then sniffed his own wrist. "Is it unpleasant?"

"No, not at all," Sion answered, perhaps a little too quickly, ignoring Wonbin who scoffed beside him.

"Okay," Yushi simply said. "I never really tried to hide it, though."

"Yeah, it's on me. I guess I just never notice.. apparently, I'm not very perceptive, huh? I feel kinda bad about it," he laughed awkwardly.

Yushi frowned at that, "You're fine, hyung. It's my personal problem. You don't have to feel bad for not knowing."

Yushi's softly-spoken honesty made Sion a little confused. He had follow-up questions, but he had a feeling that the younger might not like to continue talking about this, so he put the topic to rest.
