It was time. The day I was finally going to see my mother again.
For once Legion was there when I awoke with his usual cold presence. I wondered if his recent behaviour perhaps meant that he regretted his gift to me but he said no such thing, not even when I jumped out of bed in joy.
From getting dressed to breakfast, it all went by in a painfully slow haze. Legion disappeared yet again but I was too busy making time pass by telling Marissa about all my favourite memories of my mother. Marissa listened with bright eyes as I told her all the stories of my caring mother and her impressive abilities with herbs. Though her skills had been achieved through some trial and error, like the time she made me a tea for a cold that only made me hiccup a lot.
When it was finally time, I practically danced over the bridge I had originally been afraid of, with Legion in suit, he kept close behind with all the guards. Once by the forest edge right outside the village, whose prying eyes I hadn't even noticed, I stood with Legion besides me and a handful of guards behind us as we waited. The same one I had emerged from not too long ago.
The wait was tormenting and after what felt like forever with no glimpse of my mother's brown hair or her earthy green eyes, I was about ready to retrieve her myself.
Every rustle of leaves made me squirm impatiently.
And then just as I couldn't take it anymore, I saw her. Her face lit up with the same light I felt washing over mine. But it wasn't just her, along side with her walked Aaron and my heart almost combusted with happiness. The two people I missed the most were here! Both!
My legs began moving before I could even question what Aaron was doing here. Legion said something loudly in his language to the guards escorting my mother and Aaron but was cut short as I moved. The guards paled at his words but I didn't care.
I felt his fingertips grace my skin in a failed attempt to secure my wrist, I was faster than he could react though. He barked out an order but I wasn't listening.
My mother's warm smile broadened upon seeing me bolting towards her. It felt almost like a dream. Like I was floating towards her effortlessly in no time.
I was in a full sprint in a matter of seconds, running straight towards the arms of my mother, to the loving touch I had craved since I left.
I heard Legions second attempt to stop me but I was practically by my mother. There was no point.
My mother opened her arms, welcoming me, and I stretched mine out as far as I could. With nothing left but the last step to unite us a wind rushed past me. But the wind wasn't like a breeze, no it was hard as a rock and it carried me with it.
All my senses ticked off, this was the danger that had been lurking all along. I just knew it.
Everything that I had been suppressing since meeting Legion sprung out with no ability to prevent or control it.
As the unexpected force came to a stop I landed on all fours with a snarl. My wolf had broken out.
I went into a defensive stance while scanning my surroundings. I was in the forest, no longer by the edge. No mother, no Legion and no Aaron.
What had taken me here?
And just how far was it? It felt like everything happened in a fraction of a second yet I couldn't even smell Legion anywhere near which meant I was very far away from him.
"I'm sorry we had to meet this way Willow."
A melodic male voice spoke from behind me.
I turned and snapped into the air as a warning.
