"I told you... I... I don't know how that works." I manage to get the words out of my mouth, each one feeling as if it had stuck in my throat on the way out. "I don't understand what you're trying to insinuate."
The several white coated men gathered around the table stare at me. Some with smirks, others a gravenses I've never seen before. What they want I don't fully know but whatever it is, it can't be good.
"We have been paying you for several months now, Dr. Smith and yet, it seems we are no closer to our goals than before we hired you here." Director Allan Norse grins with pure glee as he berates me in front of the board, standing to deliver it in an even more condescending way from the highest table. I open my mouth to speak but he holds up his hand to silence me. I'm incensed. "We could excuse some of your excessive past behavior as long as we were getting results but we haven't gotten any in quite some time. Before you say anything we understand you have been trying and we've decided to... give you some help to speed up results." He smiles now, a full toothy smile. I notice a chip in his top left tooth.
"Help me out?" I start to say the question but a sharp and quick jab from behind catches my attention.
I crane my neck and to my horror find a needle jabbed into the soft and tender flesh of my upper left arm. In shock I look up finding a masked lab tech in clean gear staring me down as he presses down the syringe, leaking a blue liquid into my veins. I look back before falling limp. My consciousness remains, but I have no control of my limbs or voice. Fear, terror, pure and all encompassing. Dr Allen continues.
"Allow me, to explain." He steps down from his soap box and walks towards me, his shiny shoes clicking on the concrete floor. Louder and louder as they get closer and closer. "What you are experiencing now is the result of exposure to what we refer to as, combat dose b7. A complex solution we created rendering the body useless to the host but retaining their consciousness entirely for a controllable amount of time determined by the amount injected. In your case, 15 minutes. Which will be plenty of time for all we need to do." He crouches down beside me, running his fingers up my back, finding the top of the zipper on my dress. "As you remember, we tasked you most recently with figuring out how those monsters procreate, their mating rituals and so on. And you know what you've found?" He lifts my head up by my hair, forcing me to look him dead in the eyes. "Nothing." He sneers as he pulls the zipper of my dress down. I can do nothing as he pulls the sleeves down my shoulders and the front of my dress falls away from my body, revealing the bra and underwear underneath. I can do nothing to stop the humiliating event. "But we've been watching and our best scientists have come up with an engenius little experiment." He pulls the dress down and over my legs tossing it to the side. Next he unhooks my bra, removing it slowly. My eyes tear up at the sick smiles of the gathered board as they stare at my exposed breasts. Next, my underwear is removed. He grins at what he's done. "You'll be a part of the test of course, it'll really streamline the process that you started. And all we have left to do is one more tiny little injection and you'll be all set." Once again I am stabbed but this time I don't see the syringe. "An agent to make your scent stronger."
My scent? Why would that matter? Wait... they don't, oh god no. I feel the antiseptic wipe, it's cold on my flaming hot skin reddened by embarrassment. It comes away just as red with my blood dotting the cloth.
"You've probably figured out by now what we plan on doing with you." His disgusting smirk will be stuck in my head for a long time. I glare back.
"Mmm" I manage to mumble though my lips feel like tv static.
"Ope, looks like the b7 is wearing off, time to send her through."
And with that I am unceremoniously dragged across the floor, all the other board members craning their wrinkled necks to catch a view of my naked form being pulled towards the loading entrance. I can feel my fingers beginning to slowly wake up and I grab weakly at anything I can failing miserably each time. They slide the doors open, revealing the large enclosure inside. This can't be it. This can't be how I go. They drag me to the ledge, a good 10ft plus drop below me. With one last smirk, dr Allen uses his foot to push me over the edge. And I fall.
I hit the ground hard, one of my ankles twisting awkwardly beneath me. I cry out pitifully, forced to watch the doors close after spitting me out. Now what?
I'm slowly able to regain control of my limbs. The movement uncomfortable and delayed at first quickly becomes easier as my fear grows. I don't know where he is and I don't know if he knows I'm here. I wallow in the mud and dirt on the floor of the habitat. Wait, that's it. I quickly pick up the muddy clay in my hands, rubbing it between my fingers. This will do for now. Until I can make it to a water source and thoroughly wash my scent away. I haven't spent terribly long studying this creature but I know his hunting capability is far deadlier than most known to man. I quickly rub the muck over my skin, making a thin coat of reddish brown clay on my skin. Head to toe I slather the wet mud. My ankle smarts at the slightest brush. I lean against the concrete wall of the enclosure, the metal grate pressing painfully into me as I use it to inch my way to my feet. It'll be slow going, but I can do it.
I manage to stumble my way to the stream that runs through the enclosure. I don't know how. The pain in my ankle made my eyes water and threatened to spill me over into convulsions as I picked my way through the thick underbrush, attempting to stay out of sight of the observation box. Fucking board, they always were the type to sacrifice their fellow man. I thought about them as I walked, the anger kept me going and now, as I gaze at the stream that's really a small River, I feel some hope again.
I slowly lower myself into the cool waters and breath a sigh of relief. I made it this far. Maybe I can make it to the fence that separates us from the rest of the wildlife park without being seen by security, or by... Kesstar. I shiver. God forbid he find me. God forbid.
"Attention..."
What the fuck?!
I sit up with a start.
"Attention. To whom it may concern, we thought it ought to be known we've released a little prize into your pen."
Oh fuck.
The drone of the loudspeaker that used to cause me dull annoyance now floods me with horror.
"You find it, it's all yours."
It cuts off mid laugh. I'm so screwed. I guess my head start is over. I dive down into the water, soaking myself entirely and swim to the other side. Anything to throw him off my scent now. I'll follow the water up as far as I can and dip in every now and then. It's all I can do.
It works for a time. I trudge through the mud, dragging my ankle along. I find a stick somewhere along the line and use it as a helpful crutch. But before too long, the way gets rockyer. Large cliffs begin to rise up and I have to abandon the water. I pick my way through the woods, a ways away from the smooth grasslands surrounding the observation box. I'm lost in thought when my foot connects with something and I tumble to the ground.
"Fuck!" I cry softly, collapsing into the mud, barely holding my head above the brown mess.
A searing pain plunges through my injured ankle. I manage to push myself up into a sitting position to peer behind me. What the hell did I trip over? I look back the way I came. No rock or root or burrow to be seen but a sudden shifting of leaves to the trail side catches my eye. What was that?! In a panic I scramble to get up, once again utilizing all fours to regain my stature only to turn back around and be faced with my worst nightmare.
Towering above me is none other than the test subject and study project I had been working on for the last 12 months. Kesstar. He smirks down at my cowardly form. The sunlight gleams off of his scales, the many greens and golds blending in with the forest around us. His muscular body, quite larger than mine ripples as he moves, showing just how much power lies within. He looks me over with his golden eyes, his sharp fangs peeking out from between his lips.
I whimper softly. Only once had I been inside the enclosure with him and it hadn't gone well.Flashback
"Dr Smith, all we need is the sample and then we can go." The team leader assured me.
I didn't have time to learn her name before they bussed us off to get samples. I guess they had finally found a compound they claimed was strong enough to knock the thing out. I didn't believe it. I saw them administer it. There was no way it was enough and anything that was enough would be way too strong to keep him alive. And I can see him breathing.
"You don't even have to retrieve the sample but at least get close enough to get good look at the thing."
I give in, too tired to take more of their nagging. I step closer, the dry grass crunching underfoot. Someone says something to me teasingly. I turn. And then I'm in the air. The weight of a tree trunk presses against my waist and shoulders. I look down. Enormous, muscled arms, dotted with scales are wrapped around me. A long green tail that glitters with gold loops below me. Around me the team scatters in terror, several drawing their guns. Above me the security do the same, their guns though, hold real bullets. I gasp softly, kesstars enourmous chest presses into my back like a brick wall.
"Please, please don't do this." I croak.
Out of the corner of my eye I see his fangs fully extended, the tips dripping with a pinkish colored venom. Acidic most likely. He pauses, tongue flicking over his lips. "P...please."
"Put the girl down." Echos over the loud speaker.
I gulp.
"It's not worth it." It echoes out again.
Kesstar hesitates for a moment before grumbling quietly so only I could hear. "Not yet at least." Before tossing me to the ground several feet away from him seeming to have little care how I impact.
End of flashbackI try to slowly crawl backward but to my shock find he's already blocked that escape route with part of his lengthy and powerful tail. My ankle hits it and I blurt out a soft whine and wince in pain. I don't know if it's just my imagination but I swear I see his smile falter and his eyes narrow with concern as he glares down at my far smaller form compared to his.
"Hello Doctor." He hisses, the first time I've heard his voice again in weeks. I flinch at it, goosebumps rising on my skin. He looks me over, fully taking in my complete lack of clothes. I try to keep myself low to the ground so I don't bare all.
I watch helplessly as he inches closer, I stare down at the dirt not knowing what to do. I notice his tail behind me begin to move away. I know it's a stupid idea, but, I have to try. I leap to my feet and try to run only for my ankle, more damaged then before to collapse on me as soon as any weight is placed there. As quickly as it had begun my grand escape is over. I drop to the ground with a weak and painfully sad moan. The pain to much to even see clearly.
"Come now, you know better than to run." I hear the soft hiss of a whisper just above me and I grimace as a large clawed hand clenches around my shoulder.
He rolls me over onto my back with ease. His strength overpowers mine like I am a bug. He looks me over, taking in my mud, leaf, and cut covered form. He uses one of his sharp claws to brush a clump of muddy hair out of my face. He leans down, taking a deep breath as he closes me in with his large body. I can do nothing. Panic wells up. But before it can inspire me to do something horribly stupid again, I feel the sharp scrape of fangs against the tender skin of my neck.
"You're hurt." He whispers softly. "More so after that little stunt." I shiver as his fangs lightly poke me. I know the power of the venom within. Nothing good can come from a bite. "Best to incapacitate you for the time being." He says more to himself than me.
But I still hear him, and the terror kicks in. I don't want to be incapacitated! Before I can even try to escape, as if he could feel the decision in my body, his fangs sink into the exposed flesh. I cry out hopelessly, the sound ringing out in the forest. I feel him pump something into my veins. A dull heaviness and fuzziness filling me. Honestly better than the injection the board gave me before. Instead of complete loss of power, my body just feels tired and any movement is slowed down so much I don't even want to try. I lazily draw in a long breath, blinking my eyes like a tiny baby fawn. He picks me up, holding my small body to his chest in a bridal position, the warmth of his body helping the pull to fall asleep.
"But I..." I say slowly, fighting off the darkness. "I don't want to die."
He stops in his tracks, the end of his tail flicking sharply at those words. He stares down at me with concern. With shocking gentleness he reaches down, cupping my face with one of his large hands, his thumb gently stroking my cheek.
"You will not die." He soothes me gently, though I think I may be imagining it due to the flood of venom I've just received. "I promise you." And I fall into the depth and darkness of sleep, his words the last thing I hear as I'm slithered away.
