The Raven and The Jay

Beginning

Jaypaw padded out of the medicine cat den and sat a few tail lengths away from its entrance.  He has scented the border patrol coming home along with the scent of an unknown cat or kitten really.  Berrypaw, Brightheart, and Hazelpaw came through the thorn barrier. So Dustpelt has the stranger kit. Jayfeather thought right before Dustpelt pulled through the gorse tunnel holding a kit that was four to five moons old, just a moon or two younger than Jaypaw. Firestar and Brambleclaw met with Dustpelt below the stone ledge of the leaders den. Dustpelt dropped the kit roughly and it let out a quiet squeal of pain. Jaypaw jumped up and walked closer so he could hear better.
"Found her by the two-leg den wondering around," Dustpelt hissed.
"Where there any signs of anyone with her?" Firestar asked.
"No, Firestar, the scents of other cats are quite old and none of them were on our territory," Dustpelt said.
"Young she-kit what is your name?" Brambleclaw asked the kit.
"My father called me Flea, but my mother told me my real name is Raven," the she-kit said shyly.
"Which do you prefer?" Brambleclaw asked shocked that any cat would call their kit a flea.
"Raven. I hated my father, he was a cruel cat." Raven mumbled.
Brambleclaw grabbed Raven by the scruff and trotted to Jaypaw. He sat Raven down and nudged her towards Jaypaw.
"This is my son Jaypaw stick with him for now Raven and I'll see if any queen is willing to care for you." Brambleclaw purred to the kit before dashing off to the nursery.
Great I have kit-sitting duty! Jaypaw thought angrily. Raven sat down in front of Jaypaw observing him quietly and she stood up and sniffed at him as her gaze locked on to his blind one. Jaypaw waited for her to mock him or laugh at him, but she didn't. Raven simply pressed her nose to his gently.
"Sorry you're stuck with me," Raven mewed quietly.
"It's no problem you don't seem like much trouble." Jaypaw purred with amusement at the kit.
Raven purred back and laid next to him, she lazily swiped at his tail with one claw out. She caught his tail but let it go as soon as she did. Jaypaw waved his tail higher willing to play with her just this once. Raven sat up and swiped at his tail again. Soon she was laughing loudly and purring even louder as she rolled on her back grabbing Jaypaw's tail and bitting on it as though he had a small flea on his tail. Brambleclaw emerged from the nursery with Ferncloud by his side. They approached Raven and Jaypaw, Raven sniffed at Ferncloud the same time Ferncloud sniffed at her. It made Ferncloud purr with amusement and she gave Raven a lick on the ear.
"I think I will take her in Brambleclaw," Ferncloud mewed with a quick glance at him.
"Thanks Ferncloud I know she is in good paws," Brambleclaw nodded his thanks and took off to continue his deputy duties.
"Okay, Raven, from now on you will be known as Ravenkit until you're an apprentice," Ferncloud told the black and white kit.
"Okay," Ravenkit purred as she joined Ferncloud to go to the nursery.
"You will have two siblings now, Icekit and Foxkit," Ferncloud informed her as they began to walk, Ravenkit nodded her head nervously.
"Oh! Bye Jaypaw, see you later!" Ravenkit yowled back at Jaypaw.
"See you Ravenkit." Jaypaw called back.
Ferncloud nudged Ravenkit inside the nursery and Jaypaw continued on with his day.
